IT’S NATIONAL POUND CAKE DAY!
Pound cake is so named, supposedly, because the original recipe was: 1 lb of eggs, 1 lb of flour, 1 lb of sugar, and 1 lb of butter. Basically, a cake with a 1:1:1:1 ratio of simple ingredients. Apparently, tradition is the only thing that really matters, because you don’t get much mileage of flavor out of just those 4 things. Maybe some almond or vanilla? I mean, do you really expect to have to put toppings on it?
Our pick was the essential pound cake of the USA, Sara Lee. And we ate it plain to make sure that we really got the essence of the cake.
We shared a serving to make the most out of the calories. What we found could be summarized in AK‘s musings while eating it:
First bite: “This tastes like nothing!”
20 seconds later: “It’s like eating bread.”
50 seconds later: “This was good. It got better with each bite.”
A happy pound cake day to you all! Tomorrow we celebrate the cheese doodle. Heehee, doodle.
