[FHCx244] National Trail Mix Day/National Eat Outside Day

What a great pair to fall on the same day.

IT’S NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY AND EAT OUTSIDE DAY!

Trail mix is great for exactly what it sounds like. You’re going out for a walk, you need some good, easy energy. And you want it to be tasty. So you get some dried fruits and nuts that will easily last a while, and then usually you’ll throw in some chocolate. Ya know. For fun.

We got this lovely Tropical Mix at Lund’s & Byerly’s, which has pecans and banana chips and coconut and so on.

Highly recommended!

[FHCx243] National Toasted Marshmallow Day

Get out your sticks!

IT’S NATIONAL TOASTED MARSHMALLOW DAY!

Toasted, roasted, whatever. Marshmallows are awesome when you introduce a bit of hot. Again, we wish we had a fireplace or a fire pit somewhere nearby where we could find unsanitized twigs, stick marshmallows on the end, and hold them over a controlled combustion. Whether you prefer slightly golden or a char, toast them marshmallows and eat ’em up!

[FHCx242] National Chop Suey Day/National More Herbs Less Salt Day/National Lemon Juice Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOP SUEY DAY AND NATIONAL MORE HERBS, LESS SALT DAY AND NATIONAL LEMON JUICE DAY!

Salt is the de facto “spice” for pretty much anywhere you go. In restaurants, especially, use of salt is through the roof. People are getting hypertension left and right from how much sodium intake they are completely unaware of, just because that’s the current way of the world. Sometimes you have to take the more cognizant way and make a conscious decision not to use salt where you normally might. Like eggies!

AK put together our eggy breakfast using non-salt stuff.

Scramble! Looks like a ruffled blankie.

One other way to use less salt is to season things with lemon juice. You’d be surprised at how little you need of lemon juice to really enhance the flavor of anything you’re making, from stir fry to Mexican-style rice. That’s why we always keep some in the fridge!

2016-08-29 20.45.08.jpg

The other part of our day celebrates an outdated, mostly racist knock-off “Chinese” dish popularized in early 20th century USA: Chop Suey. Before we could understand actual Chinese food (non-Americanized), there was just a slew of immigrants who made a killing off of these mildly exotic dishes that were only inches away from being something we’d make anyway. Call them international foods and you’re a real winner. Problem is, we’ll look back at that time like we look back on mullets now. Either that, or we’ll claim that it was an actual thing called “ suì” and pretend it was okay.

Still, restaurants around the country will still humor you and make you some chop suey. Thankfully, a pretty great Chinese restaurant in the area, aptly named China Restaurant (they have Mapo Tofu, guys), still panders to some people by serving it.

Well we’re glad we made it through all of that.

[FHCx241] National Cherry Turnover Day

Fruit turnover > employee turnover

IT’S NATIONAL CHERRY TURNOVER DAY!

With cherry popsicle day recently, and cherry popover day coming up, we are getting our fill of cherries (or fake cherry flavor) for sure. And again, we’re repeating desserts that have been done already multiple times this year. Some originality would be nice, but we can’t complain if someone tells us we have to have a tasty bakery treat.

This one is courtesy of Lund’s & Byerly’s. Good enough to share!

[FHCx240] National Banana Lovers Day/National Pots de Creme Day

And boy do we love bananas!

TODAY IS NATIONAL BANANA LOVERS’ DAY AND NATIONAL POTS DE CREME DAY!

If you haven’t watched Bananya, you totally should.

They say bananas are nature’s cheesecake. We say they’re downright delightful. It’s important to keep bananas around for an easy, peelable snack anytime. Yeah they may be carby, but it’s better than reaching for those Cheetos or cookies.

Fresh from the grocery store banana tree

Look at how much this guy loves bananas!

It’s strange how many of our “national” days revolve around French food. Strange in the sense that we’re mostly war buddies but it makes sense that we still covet all the French food. It’s just so good.

SPom had this recipe lying around and she was gracious enough to help by making it for us!

Yummy!

[FHCx239] National Cherry Popsicle Day

Getting specific…

IT’S NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY!

Remember grape popsicle day? Well the Cherry Lobby must have just been counting days and going, “wait a minute…” before they invented cherry popsicle day.

Same popsicles.

Different flavor.

It hasn’t been too hot outside here. But that makes it easier to eat! If it’s slightly cooler where you eat, you don’t get a sticky red mess all over you, making you look like you just murdered something.

[FHCx238] National Banana Split Day/National Whiskey Sour Day

Banananananana

TODAY IS NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY AND NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY!

We don’t really get whiskey sour. Whiskey with a little bit of lemon and sugar just makes it taste more like whiskey. Eh. We were out to dinner with SParents at Pezzo and so we could give the rest of it to them!

2016-08-25 18.24.17.jpg

We did get to cleanse our palette with some stuff we love, though: ice cream! Ice cream summer never ends! Well, it kind of does pretty soon, but we’re in denial!

Invented in 1904, the banana split takes nature’s best fruit and pairs it with the best cold dessert. Here is the banana split AK made in its most beautiousness.

[FHCx237] National Waffle Day/National Peach Pie Day

Waffle.gif

Today’s Pearls Before Swine, by Stephan Pastis

That’s right! IT’S NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY AND NATIONAL PEACH PIE DAY!

Pearls is one of SP‘s favorite comics, so he was delighted to get this comic via e-mail from SPom this morning. Waffles are great and they do deserve their own day. Not specific waffle types, but just waffles in general. Whether you eat Eggos on the run or you take the time to go somewhere tasty like Black Coffee & Waffle Bar, today is a day to sit back and enjoy the syrupy, battery goodness that is the waffle.

2016-08-24 07.31.37

SP bought this waffle maker for AK as a present. The mix is 2 cups of Kodiak mix and 2 cups of water. Easy peasy.

2016-08-24 07.39.55

It was dark when we took this picture because AK can’t handle bright lights in the morning.

As we found out the other day, peaches are in season! And of course that means peachy desserts. No, not Melba or Cobbler. Straight up pie.

[FHCx236] National Sponge Cake Day

Because “cake” wasn’t enough…

IT’S NATIONAL SPONGE CAKE DAY!

Sponge cake doesn’t exactly seem all that exciting. Buuuuut, it’s got some good history. Most cakes were yeasted throughout humankind’s baking. The first historical record of a non-yeast cake was in 1615 by a guy who wrote a book about how to be a good housewife (i.e., a book about recipes and remedies). Yeah. This guy. This book.

And to this day, sponge cake is confused with angel food cake or pound cake. Sponge cakes contain whole eggs, and the leavening only comes from the egg whites. Chiffon cakes don’t have the egg whites beaten separately and employ a bunch of oil. Angel food cakes have only the egg whites and a higher proportion of egg white to flour.

[FHCx235] National Pecan Torte Day/National Eat a Peach Day

August didn’t feel like pecans before…

IT’S NATIONAL PECAN TORTE DAY AND NATIONAL EAT A PEACH DAY!

We recently had some chocolate pecan pie, which was great. And pecans (next to almonds) have been a favorite of those who put together the national food holidays: pecan day in April, pecan sandy day in June, pecan pie day in July… We’ll see them again when SP‘s birthday holds pecan cookie day.

But today is about the pecan torte. And just as we didn’t really know what constituted a torte when we had coconut torte day, we had to go with what people told us was a torte. And thankfully, that torte came from Surly Brew Co! Among their many other tasty foods, they have an excellent dessert menu.

2016-08-22 22.18.35.jpg

Chocolate cake made with Surly’s Damien beer, hazelnut chocolate, and salted caramel pastry cream, topped with pecans.

It’s a nice little dessert to share! Very chocolatey and salty and the little chocolate balls are fun.

It was also Eat a Peach Day! We aren’t exactly peach country up here in Minnesota. We got these beautiful Colorado peaches at HyVee.

2016-08-22 22.23.22.jpg

AK thinks that peaches are weird because they’re fuzzy. If that logic worked on other things, she probably shouldn’t like SP much either.

Tomorrow is National Sponge Cake Day!
