[FHCx365] National Bacon Day/National Bicarbonate of Soda Day

If this weren’t a leap year we’d be done tonight…

IT’S BACON DAY AND NATIONAL BICARBONATE OF SODA DAY!

Truly fitting that in our last moments of the Food Holiday Challenge that we revisit some classic food holiday shenaniganry: having two holidays for the same food. That’s right, bacon’s been done before. So it wasn’t too hard to just get some bacon and make it. It went perfectly with the latkes AK made for brunch.

Nueske’s is the business.

Latkes being prepared.

2016-12-30-10-59-56

AK was kind of scared of the bacon in the hot pan.

Latkes are best served with applesauce and sour cream, btw.

Bicarbonate of Soda. Sodium Bicarbonate has many uses in food as a leavening agent, like we used in our date nut bread not long ago (and ate today as part of Baking Soda day). It also has a number of non-food uses, including: pest control, disinfectants, fire extinguishers, personal hygiene, and running jokes from Groucho Marx. So thanks, science! You made food and the world better.

Tomorrow… is National Champagne Day!

[FHCx299] National Greasy Foods Day/World Pasta Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL GREASY FOODS DAY AND WORLD PASTA DAY!

Your doctor warned you against today. If you go in asking how to lower your cholesterol, your diet expert definitely won’t say, “Have more greasy things and pasta.” But here we are. Just minimize how much of it you’re gonna have.

So why are the greasiest foods so damn good? Basically, we just had to pack as many of the dense fats into one place as possible. Deep fry some stuff in oil and all is tasty. Today we mix grease and pasta.

2016-10-24-18-57-12

Call it a salad and that makes it better, right?

2016-10-25-17-07-33

You have to admit this is a hell of a greasy looking pasta.

It tastes like bacon and cheese and grease. Perfect.

Tomorrow is National Pumpkin Day and National Mince Meat Day!

[FHCx262] National Cheeseburger Day

Deja vu…

IT’S NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY!

Well on Thursday we celebrated double cheeseburger day. Today celebrates the singular. The original. But we aren’t going to do your regular old McDonald’s.

We’re Minnesotans. We believe in the Juicy Lucy. We went to Blue Door Pub.

The Juicy Lucy is a Minnesota invention, where cheese is stuffed into the burger. Techniques vary, and there is dispute regarding what restaurant actually created it. But Blue Door has one of SP‘s favorite burgers, so we had to do it.

Behold, the Merriam Park burger. Burger stuffed with blue cheese, bacon, and garlic, and topped with a red currant jelly.

STUFF IT INTO DA FACE

2016-09-18-18-06-51

Look at all that good stuff inside.

2016-09-18-18-03-15

Oh, and here’s AK‘s burger, the NeuFrenchy: swiss cheese, prime rib, mushrooms, swiss mornay sauce, and onion jam. Served with au jus!

Horribly unkosher and horribly delicious. It’s like we’ve taken everything we can from the cow and made it tasty together.

Tomorrow is National Butterscotch Pudding Day!

[FHCx247] National Welsh Rarebit Day/International Bacon Day

IT’S NATIONAL WELSH RAREBIT DAY AND INTERNATIONAL BACON DAY!

We know Harley Morenstein would probably be spending today bathing in a tub full of bacon. Bacon is amazing. If we had our way, we would be eating the bacon at Manny’s Steakhouse every day. It looks like this:

2015-05-16 18.30.33.jpg

They make it with Nueske’s pork belly. Bacon may be hyped up everywhere you go, and the words “applewood smoked” have started to just look like the word “the” as far as prevalence, but it has good reason. Today we had some at lunch at Mill Valley Kitchen.

2016-09-03 12.11.54

Alright. Raise your hand if you can name more than two Welsh foods. That’s what we thought. We don’t mean to be offensive. The UK has given us foods like Fish n Chips. Or has it? (Spoiler alert: Spanish Jews brought fried fish to England in the 17th century.)

Welsh Rarebit is one of those foods that people might know the name but not what it is. No it’s not Rabbit. Common misconception, as that was originally the name of the food. And the word “rarebit” has no other use in the English language than for Welsh Rarebit. It’s basically just a cheese sauce. It’s good! We used Alton Brown’s recipe.

2016-09-03 17.40.33

2 Tbsp butter

2016-09-03 17.42.59

Whisk in 2 tbsp of flour, then dijon mustard, worcestershire, salt, pepper, and a half cup of some Porter beer.

2016-09-03 17.43.55

Look at it go!

2016-09-03 17.44.53

Add 3/4 cup heavy cream

2016-09-03 17.45.01

Slowly whisk in some shredded cheddar (shreddar)

2016-09-03 17.55.31

Pour over toast! We ate it with steak.

A sentence that was said after dinner: “What else can we put this cheese sauce on?”

Verdicts:

  1. Graham cracker was pretty good, actually.
  2. Marshmallow was not.
  3. Crackers were excellent, as you could imagine.

Tomorrow is National Macadamia Nut Day!

[FHCx10] Bittersweet Chocolate Day

“That’s why I hate bittersweet chocolate. I don’t even– What’s the point of that? Why not just sweet? I mean who- who are you helping?”

-Michael Scott, The Office

TODAY IS BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE DAY!

Chocolate is awesome. We can all see that. Problem is, the internet could not give me a definite answer as to what is “bittersweet” chocolate. Some say that it’s equivalent to “extra dark” chocolate, others say it’s entirely based on baking and chocolate liquor, and… well, Wikipedia is giving me conflicting emotions right now.

Still! Some bars will specifically say Bittersweet, so let’s get to the point here: Chocolate.

Our selection of chocolate for the evening

AK picked out some beautiful chocolate bars for us tonight. We don’t have immediate access to SP‘s favorite French chocolate from Hevin, but this suited us nicely. Our general feelings on these chocolates were…

2016-01-10 19.25.29

A very wholesome dark chocolate bar. It dared us to share, so we did!

2016-01-10 19.27.28

Scharffen Berger, already mentioned numerous times on SpakWillSnack

2016-01-10 19.31.07

Theo’s Sea Salt was a salty, sweet combination that altered the kind of bitterness of the dark chocolate. A good find.

2016-01-10 19.32.55

One of the few bacon-chocolate hybrids that actually works.

Hope you all got to have a little piece of chocolate today!

Tomorrow is both Milk Day and Hot Toddy day. SP is staying home sick tomorrow with a cold, and Hot Toddies are supposed to cure what ails ya. It’s almost like we planned it. But we didn’t. He’s miserable right now. Poor baby.
