[FHCx350] National Cupcake Day

THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY?!

IT’S NATIONAL CUPCAKE DAY!

As if cake wasn’t good enough, you can put it in a little paper wrapper, and then use about 20x as much frosting as would normally go on a slice of cake. And we’ve had our share of cupcakes this year. As we’ve previously done chocolate cupcake day and vanilla cupcake day, today was sort of a compromise: cookies ‘n cream!

Because why have a cupcake if it doesn’t have some sort of chocolate?

Tomorrow is National Chocolate Covered Anything Day.

[FHCx344] National Pastry Day

Specific pastry days were getting too tough to come up with, so to hell with it!

IT’S NATIONAL PASTRY DAY!

ANYTHING GOES!

Anything with flour and water that’s sweet, we suppose? Ehhhh, a spanakopita could count as pastry, too. So anything with flour and water? Is bread a pastry? Hnngggg, the decisions!

Once again, the major problem that we face is that we don’t live in France, where every street has a patisserie worth checking out. Pastries and butter as far as the eye can see. We wanted to get close to the Parisian Paradise, so we bought one of SP‘s favorite pastries.

2016-12-08 18.15.48.jpg

Best by 9/1/17 as if they’ll last that long.

These are the kinds of pastries you’d have to hide or SP will go full beast-mode and devour them. Whatever your pastry choice is today, indulge!

Tomorrow is National Lager Day.

[FHCx337] National Fritters Day

Fry something!

IT’S NATIONAL FRITTERS DAY!

A while ago we had more guidance when we were told to specifically make corn fritters. But fritters in general? We can fry anything??

Hush puppies?

Beignets?

Apples?

Apple fritters aren’t fried apples. But they’re damn good. And another reference to Albuquerque goes here.

We couldn’t resist having two of these earlier in the week.

Tomorrow is National Peppermint Latte Day.

[FHCx335] National Mousse Day

Not mouse, not moose,

IT’S NATIONAL MOUSSE DAY!

Air bubbles making something tastier? Ridiculous… but true! There’s something about the texture of a mousse that really adds to the experience, and of course the French food scientists would be the ones to come up with it.

As if we’ve never featured Lund’s & Byerly’s amazing bakery before, tonight’s mousse was a special treat from the ol’ LnBs (pronounced, “Ellenby’s”).

Look at that beautiful moussey center…

Tomorrow is National Pie Day (we disagree) and National Eat a Red Apple Day!

[FHCx315] National Vanilla Cupcake Day

IT’S NATIONAL VANILLA CUPCAKE DAY!

We honestly would never pick out a vanilla cupcake if left to our own devices. Not that we don’t like vanilla flavors, it’s just… there are usually more exciting kinds of cupcakes to have.

But can we take a sec to give Target some major rep? Super Targets are already amazing, but they’re really starting to nail it in their bakery. Today was no exclusion. Thanks, Target, for having some real deal tasties.

[FHCx258] National Cream-Filled Donut Day/National Eat a Hoagie Day

Fill ’em up!

IT’S NATIONAL CREAM-FILLED DONUT DAY AND NATIONAL EAT A HOAGIE DAY!

Whoever made today’s hoagiebration cheated. We already did hoagie day. But today you’re specifically supposed to eat the hoagie? I don’t know. What is important is that we give a shout out to our local buddies at Davanni’s. Twin Cities folks know that Davanni’s makes the heck out of some hoagies.

The Chicken Parmigiana – grilled chicken breast with pizza sauce and cheese.

Roast Beef classic hoagie with onions and lettuce and tomato.

So in addition to great pizza, there’s a great sandwich. And we didn’t even know it, but they were also celebrating National Eat a Hoagie Day and gave us $2 off the sandwiches! Thanks, Davanni’s.

It’s also very-specific-kind-of-donut day. Cream filled donuts, Bismarcks, Berliners, whatever you call them, have a great idea. Why waste space with having a hole in the center of your donut? Make it a pastry all the way through, and then shove some goo in there to make it even more tasty. We think Lund’s & Byerly’s does a great job with their variety in their bakery.

[FHCx241] National Cherry Turnover Day

Fruit turnover > employee turnover

IT’S NATIONAL CHERRY TURNOVER DAY!

With cherry popsicle day recently, and cherry popover day coming up, we are getting our fill of cherries (or fake cherry flavor) for sure. And again, we’re repeating desserts that have been done already multiple times this year. Some originality would be nice, but we can’t complain if someone tells us we have to have a tasty bakery treat.

This one is courtesy of Lund’s & Byerly’s. Good enough to share!

[FHCx150] National Coq Au Vin Day

Chicken! Bwaaaak!

IT’S NATIONAL COQ AU VIN DAY!

Another French cuisine holiday doesn’t faze us at all. We’re in it to win it. This time we chowed down at Patrick’s Bakery in Edina/Richfield and it was terrific. This place is an amazing bistro with an unbelievable bakery. And since we didn’t get enough French food at Salut last Tuesday, we wanted to get something different.

Coq Au Vin is one of those important standards. It’s also one which helped solidify the popularity of Julia Child as one of her breakout recipes in 1961. The dish is more than just chicken/hen and red wine. We’re talking mushrooms, bacon, and all the fixings. No more paragraphs. Pictures of our dinner:

[FHCx30] National Croissant Day

Oh, France. What food have you made that isn’t amazing…

TODAY IS NATIONAL CROISSANT DAY!

SPuncle Ricky has lived in Paris for a long time, and I (SP) have fortunately been able to visit a few times over the years. And every time I go, the main thing on my mind is French patisserie. Well, all sorts of food, but mostly the things that are made with flour and/or chocolate. The problem is, we weren’t able to secure some cheap tickets to Paris for the day to pick up a bundle of croissants.

Instead, we were able to go to a favorite French cafe in Minneapolis, Patisserie 46. These guys mean serious business when it comes to their French bakery items. Croissants, brioche, chocolate, all of those amazing things. They don’t have palmiers though, so put that on the list for the must-have of the next Paris trip.

Without further adieu (get it?), here’s the goods.

We’ll have to be conscious of our carb-and-butter intake for the rest of the day, but it was well worth it!

WEIGH IN DAY RESULTS!

SP: -0.2 pounds, total lost: 88.0

AK: -3.0 pounds, total lost: 28.6

As we say in the business, “Take that, Space Coyote!” A great showing for AK this week.

Tomorrow is National Brandy Alexander Day! If booze didn’t go so well with coffee, but it went well with butter and brown sugar, let’s see how it goes with chocolate.
