[FHCx344] National Pastry Day

Specific pastry days were getting too tough to come up with, so to hell with it!

IT’S NATIONAL PASTRY DAY!

ANYTHING GOES!

Anything with flour and water that’s sweet, we suppose? Ehhhh, a spanakopita could count as pastry, too. So anything with flour and water? Is bread a pastry? Hnngggg, the decisions!

Once again, the major problem that we face is that we don’t live in France, where every street has a patisserie worth checking out. Pastries and butter as far as the eye can see. We wanted to get close to the Parisian Paradise, so we bought one of SP‘s favorite pastries.

Best by 9/1/17 as if they’ll last that long.

These are the kinds of pastries you’d have to hide or SP will go full beast-mode and devour them. Whatever your pastry choice is today, indulge!

Tomorrow is National Lager Day.

[FHCx303] National Oatmeal Day

Make a meal of it!

IT’S NATIONAL OATMEAL DAY!

There are a lot of health benefits to eating oatmeal. But it must be the case that a lot of those benefits go away when you turn to instant oatmeal. Not that it’s bad, but just… you know…

We were lucky that SPom had just made these unbelievably delicious apple oatmeal bars. Though we weren’t there for the baking, we did get this image as the recipe…

001

That’s right. Cups upon cups of sugar and 2 sticks of butter.

[FHCx282] National Pierogi Day/National Fluffernutter Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL PIEROGI DAY AND NATIONAL FLUFFERNUTTER DAY!

The PBJ, as a sandwich, is not boring. It’s not even outlived its awesomeness. But sometimes what could really go well with peanut butter on bread is some marshmallow fluff. It’s a different kind of sweet to balance out the savory, salty peanut flavor. It’s better than bad; it’s good!

PB. Fluff.

2016-10-08-09-26-16

Some like to have a thickness ratio that the fluff/PB is equal to the thickness of the bread. We’re ok with just a bit on each side.

We also have to pay respects to the pierogi today. While many cultures have their own dumplings – Chinese have bao, Japanese have gyoza, America has… dumplings – Eastern Europe’s dumplings are high on the chart of tasty starch. Whether you call them piroshok, varenyky, pelmeni, or pierogi, we’re all talking about something very similar – dough wrapping some tasty potato-y, onion-y, possibly cheesy stuff.

We got our pierogi courtesy of the Highland Grill, whose Steak and Pierogies entree is one of SP‘s favorites.

[FHCx268] National Cherries Jubilee Day

Escoffier strikes again!

IT’S NATIONAL CHERRIES JUBILEE DAY!

Auguste Escoffier, creator of Peach Melba among other SPAK food holiday foods, created the Cherries Jubilee in honor of Queen Victoria’s jubilee. She reigned from 1837 to 1901. Secret to longevity? She really liked cherries.

So we thought to honor this day by having a recipe from the very American (non-French, non-British) chef Paula Deen.

2016-09-24-21-45-14

2016-09-24-21-50-23

1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp corn starch

2016-09-24-21-50-59

Cherry water from a can of cherries

2016-09-24-21-55-05

Pour in 1/4 cup brandy/cognac and LIGHT IT ON FIRE.

2016-09-24-22-02-57

Serve over ice cream, like everything else Escoffier does.

Seriously, where would Escoffier have been without ice cream…

Tomorrow is National Crabmeat Newburg Day and National Lobster Day!

[FHCx265] National Pecan Cookie Day

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SP!

IT’S NATIONAL PECAN COOKIE DAY!

Not the most exciting treat for a birthday, but it’s still pretty good. We went with this recipe from the internet, and it turned out… ok.

2016-09-20-19-50-12

1 cup butter, 2/3 cup brown sugar, and an egg

Yummy.

2016-09-20-19-54-11

Salt, almond extract/vanilla extract, 2 cups of flour

2016-09-20-19-57-08

Super super thick and sticky dough. Refrigerated for about an hour.

2016-09-20-21-17-00

Roll some balls of dough and flatten them with the bottom of a glass (flour the glass so that the dough doesn’t just stick to the bottom)

Pecans

Cookies!

Not sure what we’d do to make them better next time, but at least we were able to make them for the holiday.

Tomorrow is National Ice Cream Cone Day and National White Chocolate Day.

[FHCx174] National Onion Rings Day/National Chocolate Éclair Day

Today is good for your heart.

IT’S NATIONAL ONION RINGS DAY AND NATIONAL CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIR DAY!

When faced with the choice of french fries, tots, or onion rings at a place like Blue Door Pub, your likelihood of popping a blood vessel increases tenfold. How can you say no to any one of those things? A bar staple, the onion ring stands up next to its fried buddies very, very well. SP has always wondered why onion rings are so different in different restaurants and here’s the conclusion:

Battered vs. Breaded. That’s it.

Breaded – Hand-coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. Crunchy and makes a fun mess. Often has bigger slices of onions than battered. Examples of Breaded that we love: Red Robin‘s Onion Tower, Tony Roma’s Onion Loaf, Timberlodge Steakhouse‘s Paul Bunyan Onion.

Battered – Battered, frequently with a beer batter and buttermilk, and deep fried. Very crispy. Examples of Battered that we love: Stout’s Pub‘s Onion Rings, George and the Dragon‘s Onion Rings, and The Hat‘s Onion Rings.

While we wish we could celebrate at all of these places today, here’s our sad attempt at eating onion rings:

2016-06-22 16.26.43

2016-06-22 16.28.14

Easier to manage and not overdo it.

We’ll have real onion rings again someday.

It’s also chocolate éclair day. If you haven’t had a chocolate éclair in a while, you’ve probably forgotten how amazing they are. It’s like having a cream puff without excessive mess (there’s still a mess) and with chocolate. What’s better? Very little. Profiteroles, we suppose.

Éclair means “flash of lightning” because that is the speed at which you are supposed to eat them! We tried to slow ourselves down for these.

2016-06-22 20.33.13

Everybody talks about how these Target éclairs are amazing. We had to try them.

[FHCx164] National Peanut Butter Cookie Day/National Jerky Day

Game of Thrones episode is finally over so we can write about how

IT’S NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE DAY AND NATIONAL JERKY DAY!

The whole “You got chocolate in my peanut butter/You got peanut butter in my chocolate” thing works with lots of things and peanut butter. In today’s case, namely, that’s cookies. Why not make cookies more awesome by adding peanut butter? Probably because some people have life-threatening peanut allergies. Suckers.

As for Jerky Day, we celebrated with some Krave jerky. It’s a great protein snack to keep you full throughout the day. In general, jerky is something you should keep around the house for regular snacking.
