[FHCx331] National Cake Day

It took us this long to just have cake.

Put a food word in front of cake and it sounds much more interesting. Corn cakes. Banana cakes. Spaghetti cakes, a.k.a. lasagna. Potato cakes. All good. Every single one.

But there’s one that stands above all, and that is the chocolate cake. Is there really anything more comforting, more delicious, or more gratifying than a slice of chocolate cake? They look good, they smell good, they feel good. Chocolate cake is life.

So even if today isn’t the anniversary of when you joined Reddit, you can still enjoy a beautiful chunk of whatever kind of cake you want.

This cake is chocolate AF.

Super Target’s bakery is really bringing it these days. Really tasty.

Tomorrow is National Bavarian Cream Pie Day!

[FHCx270] National Pancake Lovers Day

For the first several years of his teaching career, SP had a particular morning routine. Breakfast had to be easy, tasty, filling but not too hefty, and fast to make. He used to regularly eat these Jimmy Dean French Toast Griddlers until the number of grocery stores that carried the item dwindled to zero. So what to do? Kodiak!

So now every week, SP cooks up some pancakes, puts a bunch in the freezer, and has them ready to microwave to warmth in the morning. He is most certainly a pancake lover. We love pancakes.

The mix!

Containers for pancakes!

Brefes is served.

Tomorrow is National Chocolate Milk Day and National Corned Beef Hash Day!

[FHCx136] National Chocolate Chip Day

Chocolate holidays are the best!

Chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip banana bread, chocolate chip brownies and pancakes, and on and on. Where do these majesties come from? Awesome story.

In 1937, this woman named Ruth Graves Wakefield, proprietor of the Toll House Inn (see where we’re going with this?), added chunks of chocolate to cookies. The cookies completely blew up out of the stratosphere and in 1939 Nestle added her recipe to their chocolate’s packaging. What did Ruth get out of this? Money? No. A lifetime supply of chocolate. Oh the envy is enormous!

Except that the whole Nestle slave-trade puts a damper on that. Oh well.

We decided to make Chocolate Chocolate Chip Pancakes!

Tomorrow is National Coquilles St. Jacques Day. Yeah, one of those…

[FHCx71] National Eat Your Noodles Day/National Oatmeal-Nut Waffle Day

Eat those freakin’ noodles, already!

Whether we are talking about Italian or East Asian foods, noodles are incredibly important. As AK has an undying love for spaghetti, and Spaghetti Day could not ever be enough, we had to acquire more. So we went to the first place that came to mind on Noodles day… Noodles & Company!

The face of a man who needs more noodles

Noodles are great, and to have someone say “eat your noodles” makes it sound like this holiday might be difficult to celebrate. Hopefully you’ve found a way to eat your noodles, whether via the avenue de Macaroni and Cheese or by walking up Pho street. Or maybe you took der spaetzle boulevard?

For dinner we put together Oatmeal-Nut Waffles using our favorite Kodiak mix with some Quaker oats and chopped pecans. This is now the third holiday we’ve used Kodiak (after Blueberry Pancake Day and Pancake Tuesday) and this time it’s for waffles. Same kind of mix, and they make phenomenal waffles, too!

2016-03-11 17.38.51

1 cup of mix often makes more than 1 waffle. So in total we used 2 cups of mix, 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of oats and 1/4 cup of pecans. Made 2.75 waffles.

This waffle is about to be devoured.

Delicious, fluffy interior.

We love this mix because it’s so incredibly good for you while maintaining how good it tastes. All the protein really helps keep you full as well. 380 calories for 1.375 full-size Belgian waffles? Yes, please. For comparison, an IHOP waffle is 500 calories. Doesn’t taste as good as Kodiak, either.

Tomorrow is National Baked Scallops Day!
