[FHCx169] National Eat Your Vegetables Day/National Apple Streudel Day

Apples aren’t vegetables!

TODAY IS NATIONAL EAT YOUR VEGETABLES DAY AND NATIONAL APPLE STREUDEL DAY!

There are constant arguments out there as to what constitutes vegetabledom. Vegetability? According to the ever-reliable internet, “In everyday usage, a vegetable is any part of a plant that is consumed by humans as food as part of a savory meal.” So I guess apples can be vegetables?

Regardless, when we think vegetables, we think stuff your mom tried to feed you as a kid that made no sense. This weird, watery, crunchy thing? No flavor? Eat it! It’s good for you!

So yes, we totally could have prepped some vegetables in a beautiful presentation, but we wanted to go back to our roots when we were once told, “Eat your vegetables!” We present: baby carrots and celery sticks. Yay.

We got these itty bitty Apple stritties from HyVee the other day:

Gooey with a hint of crispy edge. It’s not the full-on streudel deal, but it was great nonetheless.

Tomorrow is International Picnic Day, National Cherry Tart Day, and International Sushi Day!

[FHCx156] National Cheese Day/National Cognac Day

Fancy pants day…

IT’S NATIONAL CHEESE DAY AND NATIONAL COGNAC DAY!

We celebrated Cheese Lover’s Day not long ago. We went all out on different kinds of cheeses because we are, indeed, cheese lovers. Tonight we opted for a more simple option to celebrate cheese: Tuna Specialy. Invented by cousin SParles, the tuna specialy is just an open-faced tuna melt.

Tuna! We add a tbsp of light mayo for each can we use. Then some garlic powder, onion powder, and celery salt to season.

Bread.

Tuna on bread. About 2 oz each.

Cheddar. Which is also the name of our neighbor’s cat who likes to play in our yard. He’s cute.

Shreddar.

About 1/2 oz on each.

Toast!

It’s something truly special…y! Then again, DadAK thinks hot tuna is an abomination. Not in this house!

Also, it’s cognac day. Great for cooking, great for cocktails, you should always keep some around.

Tomorrow is National Gingerbread Day! Doesn’t that belong in December…?

[FHCx67] National Cereal Day/National Crown Roast of Pork Day

Writing this while waiting for a concert to start… and finishing it now that the concert is over!

TODAY IS NATIONAL CEREAL DAY AND NATIONAL CROWN ROAST OF PORK DAY!

As SPAK are now on spring break, we had the opportunity to have a somewhat relaxed morning. And to kick it off we had some cereal. Honey Nut Cheerios.

Yay.

The real treasure today was making this crown roast of pork. Neither of us had ever even seen one in real life until today. We picked up our meat from Von Hanson’s, a local butchery with an awesome selection and great prices. The hard part was just how long the process was to prepare one of these beasts.

The crown roast as it was given to us. The crown roast itself is a loin cut with bones in that is slitted and wrapped around itself to look like – you guessed it – a meat crown.

Herb paste made from rosemary, sage, thyme, garlic, salt, pepper, and 1/4 cup of olive oil.

Rubbed with the herb paste and sat into a pan with diced celery, onion, and garlic.

Make some pan sauce with wine and chicken stock. Bake at 450 for 20 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 and let it go for 1.5-2 hours until it’s at least 145 inside.

Tada! Happy crowns.

This thing has made the house smell so damn good. We were able to share with a couple of SP‘s friends and they really enjoyed it as well. SP was really worried that he would overcook it, as pork is one of those meats that can turn not-so-good rather quickly. But it was juicy and just right. He was even a master carver! There are lots of leftovers, so I think we’ll be good for several days. Verdict: we would definitely do this again. Thanks, crown roast of pork day, for teaching us something!

Tomorrow is Peanut Cluster Day!
