IT’S NATIONAL BRANDIED FRUIT DAY!
Today was a tough one. Brandied fruit is not exactly at your regular grocery. The idea is that sometimes you want to preserve some fruit, and you can do it using a sugary alcoholy syrup. Takes a while to do, and canning is something we typically only do with our pickles.
Luckily, Cost Plus World Market carries a lot of British goods and we were able to source this bad boy:
Chewy and hearty and moist, tasted like a fig newton! Yum.
Tomorrow is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day!
I’ll have both please.
TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE DAY!
What kind of cupcakes aren’t chocolate? I’m sure they’re good, because they’re cupcakes. But they aren’t chocolate.
Some people defame the cupcake because it isn’t just cake. Some people are uber-hipster and don’t even like the resurgence of cupcakes as a trend because they’re beyond it. If it’s tasty, we’ll eat it. And Lund’s & Byerly’s always has a selection to ogle.
ALL THE CUPCAKES!
We picked out a dirt ‘n worms cupcake.
You’re right, it doesn’t look like much cake made it into this “cupcake.” But it was a lot of chocolate and it was really good.
Tomorrow is Seafood Bisque Day!
Today is two gross.
IT’S NATIONAL DESSERT DAY AND WORLD EGG DAY!
What better way to wake up than eggs AK-style? Make a couple super-runny over-easy eggs and serve on toast. Eggs around the world may be served differently, but this is SPAKhouse.
Ok. What to do for dessert… Well we left it up to chance actually. For SP‘s birthday, AK bought us tickets to go to a first-ever event held at St. Paul College, this thing they call their “Chef’s Dinner.” They brought the chefs from Revival and Surly, both restaurants of great repute in SPAK history, to oversee the culinary program students in creating a beautiful dinner. So we left it to them to provide us with dessert. But on the journey there, we have to share the following as well.
Oh there’s dessert! This cheesecake had mini sopapillas on top, and a fudge sauce made with cayenne pepper. SO good.
We loved it. It was super fun. We were glad to be part of it!
Tomorrow is… too much. National Cheese Curds Day, National Red Wine Day, National Mushroom Day, National Chicken Cacciatore Day, National Roast Pheasant Day. Oy.
Hoore! Whaddya se?
IT’S NATIONAL FRAPPE
What even is a frappe? Since Starbucks unleashed the Frappuccino on the world, nobody can think of anything other than that one specific item. Apparently it came from Greece of all places. But who cares? Starbucks has the monopoly. So we had to give in.
Because our level of basic is off the charts for today, this is specifically a pumpkin spice frappuccino. If you want to pronounce it the same way, just try pronouncing it nasally without ever closing your lips. “Frappachinaa”
Tasty. But still coffee.
Tomorrow is National Fluffernutter Day and National Pierogi Day!
TODAY IS NATIONAL APPLE BETTY DAY!
Apple Brown Betty, or as it’s known in the civilized world, “Apple Crisp,” is basically what you do if you are too lazy to make an apple pie, but you want all of the flour/sugar/butter/cinnamon/apple glob you can stuff into your face. We don’t blame the creators of Apple Betty for this. Pie can be a difficult process. This was not. We used this recipe.
Honeycrisp apples, of course. Slice them thin.
Lay them out in a pretty layer.
1 cup sugar, 3/4 cup flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Cut in the butter until the stuff looks like crumbles.
Spread on top.
Into the oven for 45 minutes at 375.
Serve with ice cream!
What is there not to like? Easy to make, with ingredients you probably have just sitting around the house. Boom.
Tomorrow is National Noodle Day.
TODAY IS NATIONAL STRAWBERRY CREAM PIE DAY AND NATIONAL DRINK BEER DAY!
Beer. Ben Franklin’s BFF. With all sorts of varieties: hoppy, malty, dark, light, etc., there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re really cool, then you get to Surly’s Brewer’s Table where you can enjoy a delicious tasting menu with beer pairings. You won’t think of beer the same way. (We did this on SP‘s birthday and it was great!)
Today we celebrated by having this Sioux City Birch Beer. It’s not beer in the traditional sense, but it sure is in the title!
Well if beer isn’t your thing, maybe dessert is?
SP‘s “contact” at Baker’s Square says that currently Strawberry Cream Pies are out because strawberries are “out of season.” This is coming from the same place that serves strawberry-rhubarb pie to octogenarians year-long. Trips to the grocery stores nearby were not fruitful (or creamful) either. So we had to make it at home!
AK mixed up some strawberry Jell-O and some vanilla pudding, and made this little pie-lets. Top with strawberry and cream and there you have it.
Look at that beautiful color!
Tomorrow is… ugh… Coffee Day…
IT’S NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILK DAY AND NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY!
Corned beef hash can be great or not great. Great is the kind you get from Mel’s Diner in San Francisco, or homemade by SPad. We chose not great (but still okay) from Hormel.
We doctored ours up with some salt and pepper. And later, some ketchup.
But to help us sleep, some chocolate milk!
Unfortunately, the sugar free syrup makes the milk look a bit more purple than brown…
Still a nice treat.
Tomorrow is National Strawberry Cream Pie Day and National Drink Beer Day!
