[FHCx279] National Apple Betty Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL APPLE BETTY DAY!

Apple Brown Betty, or as it’s known in the civilized world, “Apple Crisp,” is basically what you do if you are too lazy to make an apple pie, but you want all of the flour/sugar/butter/cinnamon/apple glob you can stuff into your face. We don’t blame the creators of Apple Betty for this. Pie can be a difficult process. This was not. We used this recipe.

2016-10-05-20-06-25

Honeycrisp apples, of course. Slice them thin.

Lay them out in a pretty layer.

2016-10-05-20-04-42

1 cup sugar, 3/4 cup flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

2016-10-05-20-10-06

Cut in the butter until the stuff looks like crumbles.

2016-10-05-20-15-53

Spread on top.

2016-10-05-20-18-31

Into the oven for 45 minutes at 375.

Serve with ice cream!

What is there not to like? Easy to make, with ingredients you probably have just sitting around the house. Boom.

Tomorrow is National Noodle Day.

[FHCx278] National Taco Day/National Vodka Day

TACO TUESDAY!

IT’S NATIONAL TACO DAY AND NATIONAL VODKA DAY!

I think earlier in the year we picked this up for one of the alcoholidays. We’ve had it sitting around. It’s easy enough. Dan Aykroyd would be happy that we drank it and thought of UFOs or something.

2016-10-04 19.41.16.jpg

The real star of today is the taco. Oh, glorious taco. What deliciousness have you brought us? Whether you are a fan of the gringo-style ground beef with super-yellow cheese, the au natural tortilla filled with meat, or the gourmet style with all sorts of experimental fun, you should probably know that tacos are like little miracles for your mouth.

We opted for special tacos at one of our favorite local places, Tacocat. It’s located in the Midtown Global Market, like a lot of great Minneapolitan foods.

Their chips and salsa are to die for.

2016-10-04-18-41-39

AK ordered two of The Larry: Chicken, chorizo, and cheese. Plus onions, cilantro, crema, and salsa.

2016-10-04-18-41-32

SP also got a Larry (middle) but also a special (left) with corned beef, cabbage, and mustard, and the Ruckus (right) with angus beef, pickled radish, onions, mint chimichurri, and salsa.

We could probably each eat a few dozen more, but you really have to limit yourself if you want to be able to wake up in the morning. If Marco Gutierrez says that voting against Trump means a taco truck on every corner, we’re in.

Tomorrow is National Apple Betty Day!

[FHCx277] National Caramel Custard Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL CARAMEL CUSTARD DAY!

We’re nearly out of the woods on these oddly-specific flavored item days. Finding good custard is one thing, let alone certain flavors. We picked out this one that’s from Iowa.

Very thick stuff.

Tomorrow is National Taco Day and National Vodka Day. In Sweden, it will be National Cinnamon Roll Day, but we aren’t Swedish nationals…

[FHCx276] National Fried Scallops Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL FRIED SCALLOPS DAY!

We aren’t exactly by the ocean in Minnesota, but it doesn’t mean we can’t get great seafood. One restaurant in particular, Sea Salt Eatery, draws such huge crowds that we waited in line before the place even opened this morning! Their menu is impressive, and you can eat while taking a look at Minnehaha Falls.

Let’s get down to the seafood.

2016-10-02-11-21-05

Fried bay scallop tacos. You cannot pick them up until you eat some of the interior.

2016-10-02-11-20-58

Catfish po boy. Similar in magnitude. Can’t close the sub until you eat some first.

2016-10-02-11-21-07

Fried oyster po boy. Getting the gist here?

We’re glad we were able to find fried scallops at a local place. And such tasty ones, at that!

Tomorrow is National Caramel Custard Day.

[FHCx275] National Homemade Cookie Day/World Vegetarian Day

3/4 of the way through the year!

IT’S NATIONAL HOMEMADE COOKIE DAY AND WORLD VEGETARIAN DAY!

We specifically didn’t put any meat in our cookies today. We definitely have a sense of admiration for those who have the discipline to remain vegetarian. Between the current state of the treatment of animals in the US and the danger associated with bacteria, you’d think it’d be an easy choice. But nutritionally, it’s much easier to be a human omnivore, and culturally it’s a lot simpler as well. Even with the family we have vegetarians (SPaunt SPara and SPuncle SParlie), so we know.

But cookies are important, too. Especially when made at home, where you can get them fresh from the oven.

With a glass of milk, of course!

Tomorrow is National Fried Scallops Day! …and AK‘s birthday woooooo!!!

[FHCx274] National Hot Mulled Cider Day/National Chewing Gum Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL HOT MULLED CIDER DAY AND CHEWING GUM DAY!

“Chewing gum isn’t a food!” we hear you say. Well, neither are drinks. But here we are. Sometimes chewing gum can help with food. That minty feeling makes you feel like not eating any more, which can be a great help if you’re trying to stop overindulging on homemade pizza (literally us, tonight).

2016-09-30 18.49.41.jpg

We keep some of these around just for that reason.

But we also got to make ourselves a treat of some hot mulled cider as our Fall weather really starts to sink in. It’s easy to make, and it makes a lot.

2016-09-30-15-51-59

Make a Hellraiser-style pincushion out of the orange using the cloves. Some people also use Star Anise but we didn’t this time.

2016-09-30-15-53-16

2016-09-30-15-53-50

The quality of the cider obviously affects the end result. Martinelli’s is champ.

2016-09-30-15-54-28

Let it sit, covered, on super low heat, for a while.

2016-09-30-17-15-15

Enjoy the warm fuzzies!

Tomorrow is National Homemade Cookies Day and World Vegetarian Day. I think that means we get to eat a vegetarian?

[FHCx273] National Coffee Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL COFFEE DAY!

…not like we’re excited.

Most people need their Joe in the morning to help them get going. Even the smell of coffee is enough to get people in the right mood. It’s the reason that we see stupid mugs like this:

morning_coffee_level_mug

Or hear terrific songs like:

We just so happen to keep a Keurig in our guest room solely for guests who would want to have coffee, since SPAK doesn’t make any on their own. Rather than head out to one of the many places giving away free coffee today, we just made some at home (for the first time ever).
