IT’S NATIONAL FRUITCAKE DAY!
There are a lot of jokes made at the expense of fruitcakes. Let’s just roll through a few:
Where did this running joke even come from? Why don’t people like fruitcake? There’s this amazing article from the Washington Post that talks about fruitcake’s image in the US. The most memorable joke about fruitcake is likely the original: Johnny Carson joked that there really is only one fruitcake and it just keeps getting passed around.
Since then, the fruitcake industry has just been in ruins. Really! It’s fruit in cake! What bad about it?

IT’S NATIONAL SANGRIA DAY!
We’ve made it to the last alcoholiday, with the exception of Champagne Day on 12/31.
When SP hears the word “Sangria,” he thinks white people with boxed wine.
In reality, Sangria is a little bit more classy. The Spanish give us this wine kind of thing that they just call “blood” and we accept it. Alright. Well we weren’t going to try to make ours at home, but we could certainly buy a bottle of a “REAL” sangria from Total Wine.
Yep. Tastes like wine.
Moving on… Tomorrow is National Fried Shrimp Day!
IT’S NATIONAL GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY AND NATIONAL AMBROSIA DAY!
One of these is an appropriate Decembertime food. The other is definitely a Southern USA summer dish. So Southern that we used Alton Brown’s recipe for it. Ambrosia is basically an extension of fruit salad, and not the drink of immortality of the Greek pantheon. Oh well.
Makin’ some whipped cream.
Mini marshmallows, fruits, coconut shavings, and chopped pecans.
Gooey and fruity and sugary.
Because we couldn’t get enough of a sugar high off of that, we also made and ate some Gingerbread House! Gingerbread used to be restricted to professional bakers in Germany and France except on Christmas and Easter, when anyone could bake it. It got to the point where there were fierce competitions of professional gingerbread bakers. The shaping into houses made it all the more fun.
Current record for size is this dude from Texas who made a 2520-square-foot home. That’s more than 1.5 times as big as SPAK‘s house. It used up 1800 pounds of butter. And the total calorie count? Estimated at 35.8 million. That’s enough calories for an adult male to eat for 49 years.

All these sweets put us right in the mood for bedtime. ‘Night everybody!

TODAY IS NATIONAL LEFTOVERS DAY, NATIONAL MAIZE DAY, AND NATIONAL PARFAIT DAY!
We wanted to do something different from the last couple times we did parfaits. This time we picked up a fruit and yogurt parfait from McDonald’s.
Tastes like fruit and yogurt. NEXT!
Maize. We could have done something elaborate with maize, but instead opted for the cheap stuff: some tasty Xochitl chips. Says “maiz” right on the bag.
Lastly, our dinner came courtesy of last night’s Thanksgiving feast. Of course we went home with these:
There was just so much good that we had to keep eating it. Frankly, we would’ve consumed the calories anyway, it’s just a matter of having them spread out over two days instead of one. That’s being responsible, right?

IT’S NATIONAL SUNDAE DAY!
Any kind you want. It doesn’t have to be hot fudge or strawberry. Just ice cream and toppings. Usually whipped cream, some sort of sauce or syrup, maybe some fruit. Sprinkles? If you got ’em.
Tomorrow is National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day and National Pizza With Everything (Except Anchovies) Day!
IT’S NATIONAL BRANDIED FRUIT DAY!
Today was a tough one. Brandied fruit is not exactly at your regular grocery. The idea is that sometimes you want to preserve some fruit, and you can do it using a sugary alcoholy syrup. Takes a while to do, and canning is something we typically only do with our pickles.
Luckily, Cost Plus World Market carries a lot of British goods and we were able to source this bad boy:
Chewy and hearty and moist, tasted like a fig newton! Yum.

TODAY IS NATIONAL PUNCH DAY AND NATIONAL PEPPERONI PIZZA DAY!
You may have noticed that yesterday we didn’t preview today as PeppyPeepza day, and that’s because we honestly did not know. None of our sources had it listed, and SP received an e-mail from Pizza Hut with some something-or-other promotion regarding #NationalPepperoniPizzaDay. Go figure. So we made sure to pop one of these out of the fridge to enjoy!
It’s really good, actually.
Anyway, a good thing to go with your pepperoni pizza is some punch. We did not know this, but punch is actually a loan word from Sanskrit. Can you even believe that? It means “five,” because it was a drink that had alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea. Definitely not what we think of these days. Maybe the water/sugar part…
But without going overboard, we used a water flavor enhancer thingy.
Rum optional. We like it without.
Sweet sugar rush without all the sugar! Phew!
