We’re getting weird.
IT’S NATIONAL COCOA DAY AND NATIONAL ICE CREAM AND VIOLINS DAY!
Why violins? A quick google search shows that a whole bunch of people perpetuate this holiday without knowing where it even came from. We just do what we’re told when people tell us to eat ice cream. AKma and AKpa provided the soundtrack of violin music. Here were some picks.
New flavor from Halo Top!
On the one hand, ice cream is great. On the other hand, it’s December and…
So really what helped us today was celebrating cocoa. Cocoa could mean a lot of things to a lot of people but the first thing that came to mind for us was a hot cup of chocolatey comfort. On a frigid day like today, it’s important to have hot cocoa.

IT’S NATIONAL SUNDAE DAY!
Any kind you want. It doesn’t have to be hot fudge or strawberry. Just ice cream and toppings. Usually whipped cream, some sort of sauce or syrup, maybe some fruit. Sprinkles? If you got ’em.

TODAY IS WORLD FOOD DAY AND NATIONAL LIQUEUR DAY!
Liqueur is what you have when you want alcohol but you want it to taste like something completely unrelated. Coffee liqueur, orange liqueur, etc. In the true American spirit, they are frequently sweetened to all hell. If we had to pick one liqueur for today, we would pick Grand Marnier. It’s boss.
World Food Day you ask? Celebrate the world’s food? The day was established in 1979 as the anniversary of the creation of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Basically, it’s all about becoming aware of the world’s food and agriculture in both its pride and challenges. Every year has a theme, and 2016’s is climate change. “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.”
But to celebrate, we took a trip to Minneapolis’s World Street Kitchen, to have some worldly food.

The Korean Yum Yum Bowl. Korean bbq beef short rib with peanuts, kimchi, onions, and secret sauce, served over rice.
We also stopped by next door to Milk Jam to get some ice cream. Look at the kinds of flavors they have here.
Whew. Thanks for the food, world!

We’re nearly out of the woods on these oddly-specific flavored item days. Finding good custard is one thing, let alone certain flavors. We picked out this one that’s from Iowa.

Tomorrow is National Taco Day and National Vodka Day. In Sweden, it will be National Cinnamon Roll Day, but we aren’t Swedish nationals…
Escoffier strikes again!
IT’S NATIONAL CHERRIES JUBILEE DAY!
Auguste Escoffier, creator of Peach Melba among other SPAK food holiday foods, created the Cherries Jubilee in honor of Queen Victoria’s jubilee. She reigned from 1837 to 1901. Secret to longevity? She really liked cherries.
So we thought to honor this day by having a recipe from the very American (non-French, non-British) chef Paula Deen.
1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp corn starch
Cherry water from a can of cherries
Pour in 1/4 cup brandy/cognac and LIGHT IT ON FIRE.
Serve over ice cream, like everything else Escoffier does.
Seriously, where would Escoffier have been without ice cream…

Yes, there’s something weird about white chocolate. There are very few things that have white chocolate that are worth going out of your way for. We even disguised our white chocolate consumption in this autumny bread pudding from Lund’s & Byerly’s:

TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE DAY!
We could have gone out to Snuffy’s Malt Shop and had one of the best milkshakes in the Twin Cities. Or Burger Jones for SP‘s favorite, the Twixie Treat. Or one of the many places that takes ice cream, makes it drinkable, and then gives you a cup that instantly gets devoured. The whole thing.
But we decided to try this at home with the blender. Wasn’t the smartest idea we’ve had. We had some chocolate Halo Top around and some milk and ice, so we figured it couldn’t be bad. Well it wasn’t bad… Just not… great?
Ok, we’ll shut up about the Halo Top!
More icy than creamy. Don’t you hate that?
