Not mouse, not moose,
IT’S NATIONAL MOUSSE DAY!
Air bubbles making something tastier? Ridiculous… but true! There’s something about the texture of a mousse that really adds to the experience, and of course the French food scientists would be the ones to come up with it.
As if we’ve never featured Lund’s & Byerly’s amazing bakery before, tonight’s mousse was a special treat from the ol’ LnBs (pronounced, “Ellenby’s”).
He’s so happy that he’s about to be digested!
Look at that beautiful moussey center…
Tomorrow is National Pie Day (we disagree) and National Eat a Red Apple Day!
Scrambled apple? Screwed pineapple? Game of Scrabble?
IT’S NATIONAL SCRAPPLE DAY!
Read the ingredients on this scrapple.
The Pennsylvania Dutch really outdid themselves with this dish. As many pork scraps as you can scrounge (pork heart? heart?) and combine it with some cornmeal and flour to make a loaf. Then pan fry it so that it’s super crispy. It is considered to be an actual ethnic food of the Mennonites and Amish of the Eastern states. Crazy.
How the name scrapple? I don’t know. Where do you even get this stuff? We almost weren’t able to source any because the one place in the Twin Cities that made it, Tiny Diner, no longer does. Thanks again to Lund’s & Byerly’s for getting us some of this from the Jones crew.
Anyway, are you totally grossed out? We had to try it to be sure. And we actually found it to be pretty tasty. Like a breakfast sausage kind of flavor.
Frying pan on medium heat. Cook 8-10 minutes per side.
Tomorrow is National Vanilla Cupcake Day!
TODAY IS NATIONAL CANDY CORN DAY AND NATIONAL BUY A DOUGHNUT DAY!
Let’s face it: candy corn is just solidified frosting. We’d know, considering we just used a bunch of that stuff to ice a haunted chocolate house. And for those who don’t like frosting, a rare breed like SPad, candy corn isn’t all that appealing. Ask most adults and they’ll tell you that candy corn is not high on their list of priorities. Originally, it was called chicken feed, so you can tell what people of the 1880s thought of it, too.
Still, many fondant candies cannot compare to the prolific candy corn. It’s not corn but it’s still good!
The classic candy corn!
Just a few of these is enough to give you a sugar rush.
We also had to buy a doughnut day. Heaven forbid we look at the bakery section at our store. I mean, look at it!
Aw jeez, what’re we gonna do…
We opted for the fried cinnamon donut, just to be a bit different. It’s mapley!
Now coming up on Saturday is the second National Doughnut Day of the year. We thought we could hold off on this one until then but then decided against it. We’ll do something more special on Saturday than generic grocery donut!
Tomorrow is National Caramel Apple Day.
TODAY IS NATIONAL GREASY FOODS DAY AND WORLD PASTA DAY!
Your doctor warned you against today. If you go in asking how to lower your cholesterol, your diet expert definitely won’t say, “Have more greasy things and pasta.” But here we are. Just minimize how much of it you’re gonna have.
So why are the greasiest foods so damn good? Basically, we just had to pack as many of the dense fats into one place as possible. Deep fry some stuff in oil and all is tasty. Today we mix grease and pasta.
Call it a salad and that makes it better, right?
You have to admit this is a hell of a greasy looking pasta.
It tastes like bacon and cheese and grease. Perfect.
Tomorrow is National Pumpkin Day and National Mince Meat Day!
I’ll have both please.
TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE DAY!
What kind of cupcakes aren’t chocolate? I’m sure they’re good, because they’re cupcakes. But they aren’t chocolate.
Some people defame the cupcake because it isn’t just cake. Some people are uber-hipster and don’t even like the resurgence of cupcakes as a trend because they’re beyond it. If it’s tasty, we’ll eat it. And Lund’s & Byerly’s always has a selection to ogle.
ALL THE CUPCAKES!
We picked out a dirt ‘n worms cupcake.
You’re right, it doesn’t look like much cake made it into this “cupcake.” But it was a lot of chocolate and it was really good.
Tomorrow is Seafood Bisque Day!
The antithesis to Devil’s Food Cake!
TODAY IS NATIONAL ANGEL FOOD CAKE DAY!
Celebrate the angels in your life with some cake that is more air than substance! Tasty, delicious, poofy air. Really, it’s awesome because you get a huge honking piece and really there’s not much badness to it. As you remember from Devil’s Food Cake Day almost half the year ago, this is the cake that came first. Stiffly beaten egg whites, no butter. This is a spongey cake that goes well with just about everything.
Gorgeous browned outside on this angel food cake.
With the accoutrements!
Terrific for a light dessert with the fat free Reddi Wip and a bit of chocolate sauce.
Tomorrow is National Sausage Pizza Day!
IT’S NATIONAL ICE CREAM CONE DAY AND NATIONAL WHITE CHOCOLATE DAY!
Prose by SPuncle SPicky: “White chocolate is NOT chocolate. It’s just congealed cacao grease with a little — I guess I’ll go that far — chocolate taste.”
Yes, there’s something weird about white chocolate. There are very few things that have white chocolate that are worth going out of your way for. We even disguised our white chocolate consumption in this autumny bread pudding from Lund’s & Byerly’s:
But we also have to say hello to autumn by waving goodbye to summer with one last treat: an ice cream cone!
Raz’s, the local place
Glossy, beautiful elephant tracks
SP with a triple chocolate.
Now to go hyper on a sugar rush!
Tomorrow is National Great American Pot Pie Day.
