[FHCx347] National Gingerbread House Day/National Ambrosia Day

Sweet!

IT’S NATIONAL GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY AND NATIONAL AMBROSIA DAY!

One of these is an appropriate Decembertime food. The other is definitely a Southern USA summer dish. So Southern that we used Alton Brown’s recipe for it. Ambrosia is basically an extension of fruit salad, and not the drink of immortality of the Greek pantheon. Oh well.

Gooey and fruity and sugary.

Because we couldn’t get enough of a sugar high off of that, we also made and ate some Gingerbread House! Gingerbread used to be restricted to professional bakers in Germany and France except on Christmas and Easter, when anyone could bake it. It got to the point where there were fierce competitions of professional gingerbread bakers. The shaping into houses made it all the more fun.

Current record for size is this dude from Texas who made a 2520-square-foot home. That’s more than 1.5 times as big as SPAK‘s house. It used up 1800 pounds of butter. And the total calorie count? Estimated at 35.8 million. That’s enough calories for an adult male to eat for 49 years.

And here we are, building ours from a kit.

It was hit by a snowcandy storm before it was disassembled and partly eaten.

All these sweets put us right in the mood for bedtime. ‘Night everybody!

[FHCx192] National Pina Colada Day/National Pick Blueberries Day

We got caught in no rain today.

IT’S NATIONAL PINA COLADA DAY AND NATIONAL PICK BLUEBERRIES DAY!

There aren’t many places to pick blueberries around here. AK is able to pick them out at the grocery store…

2016-07-09 18.01.41.jpg

THOSE ONES.

We also found things that look kinda like blueberries while out on a Pokemon Go safari today. We didn’t actually pick these because we would probably die.

2016-07-10 11.14.38.jpg

Delicious but deadly? We may never know!

The day didn’t specifically say to eat the blueberries… soooo… whatever.

Anyway.

We went to the Mall of America today since we knew this picture would be appropriate. Margaritaville has been under construction for several years. And every time we pass by, we imagine what could have been: dudes with visor tan lines sitting at a bar with their backs to many drunk women on a bachelorette party night.

2016-07-10 13.32.52.jpg

It was also appropriate to go to the MoA because of the Corona-owned Cantina #1. We had no idea that this pina colada was going to be a big spectacle! The “Eroticolada” is “Cruzan coconut rum and Dekuyper Luscious Melon schnapps” mixed with creme de coconut. Well that’s neat. HOW ABOUT SERVING IT IN A COCONUT?!

2016-07-10 14.50.58

That probably took some effort…

2016-07-10 14.50.49

YOUR COCONUT WASN’T ENOUGH?! HAVE ANOTHER FULL GLASS OF IT ON THE SIDE!!

Needless to say, we didn’t get through it all. It tasted hardly boozy, which probably means that it was incredibly boozy. A nice cool breeze of a drink on a hot Minnesota afternoon.

Tomorrow is National Blueberry Muffin Day and National Mojito Day!

[FHCx111] National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day/National Lima Bean Respect Day

Topsy turvy!

TODAY IS NATIONAL PINEAPPLE UPSIDE-DOWN CAKE AND LIMA BEAN RESPECT DAY!

The pineapple upside-down cake would have been fine as a right-side-up cake. Somebody looked at a tarte tatin and was like, “Hey! Let’s turn this stuff upside-down for no reason!” And now we have the cake as we know it. You bake it, flip it upside down, and then eat it while you get to see the slices of pineapple on top. Ooooooh.

Shopping at the store, we had everything in our cart to make one at home, when suddenly we spotted this cutie.

2016-04-20 20.22.27.jpg

A little mini-cake just for today! We decided it was probably a better decision than making one just because of the time commitment and the leftovers commitment. It was very tasty! Brown sugary, pineappley, and that satisfying crust… It’s a great dessert. It’s not chocolate, but it’s great.

Today was also Lima Bean Respect Day. Respect the bean. Thanks to the media we consumed as children, we were condition to dislike foods that were green, especially these strange beans. Black beans? Refried Beans? All good. The magical fruit, after all. But lima beans? Not supposed to go there.

And still as adults we kind of feel it. But it’s important to branch out and have some… lima… beans… I guess…

Happy lima bean respect?

[FHCx88] National Black Forest Cake Day/Something On A Stick Day

TODAY IS SOMETHING ON A STICK DAY AND NATIONAL BLACK FOREST CAKE DAY!

There’s lots of foods to have on a stick. Corn dogs, cotton candy, pickles, or frankly anything at the State Fair. Today, to celebrate our wooden cylindrical utensil friends, we had some fruit on a stick!

2016-03-28 15.57.10

Mmmmm. Tasty fruit servings…

For Black Forest Cake, we couldn’t travel all the way to the Schwarzwald. Then again, the cake isn’t even really named after the region, so much as it is named after the liquor that’s named after the region, the Schwarzwalder Kirschwasser. It’s basically cherry shnapps. It’s hard to say no to any kind of chocolate cake/kuchen/torte. We decided on having dinner at the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis where we could enjoy some schnitzel and cake. Look upon the beauty!

Veal Schnitzel

2016-03-28 20.20.11

Cherry chocolate!

It’s not the kind of cake that turns you into a lederhosen-wearing beer swiller, but it is up there as far as flavor sensations. The cake and the cream go so well together, and the cherry bits add little bits of pop to the texture. It’s also a little boozey, which can be fun for some.

Tomorrow is another cake day, Lemon Chiffon Cake!

[FHCx87] National Baked Ham with Pineapple Day/National Spanish Paella Day

No bunnies and eggs…

IT’S NATIONAL BAKED HAM WITH PINEAPPLE DAY AND NATIONAL SPANISH PAELLA DAY!

There’s something about the time of Easter that coincides with a spike in Ham sales. If there’s one dish that should celebrate the resurrection of one’s deity-person, wouldn’t you think that you would pick something that isn’t blatantly against that deity-person’s religion? Well the Christians are at it again, picking holidays to celebrate with seemingly randomly decided foods.

We got our baked ham from Honeybaked Ham. They have a storefront pretty close to our house, so SP waited in line patiently for a pound of meat. On Friday, that line was out the door with people gearing up for their Sunday holiday. And while it was just a Sunday for us, it was still tasty. AK peeled, cored, and chopped the pineapple for us and we had a quaint lunch.

2016-03-27 11.06.25

Nothing says sacred like this combo, am I right?

2016-03-27 11.13.43

Just look at how well this resembles the Easter holiday!

Well in another area where there’s a wealth of Christianity, there was another dish that was decided for March 27th completely unrelated to Easter. Spanish Paella, invented by the Valencians, is basically a Spanish Jambalaya. Or maybe Jambalaya is the Creole Paella. Rice, saffron, and some sort of meat. Apparently it takes you back to your childhood. It’s really hard to go wrong with that combination, especially when SPom offered to make it for today’s holiday.

2016-03-27 17.33.53

Recipe was courtesy of my cousin’s wife’s father.

2016-03-27 18.02.05

Look at this beautiful Paella pan!

It was just so good. AK pretty much melted. It’s got the multitude of textures between chicken and shrimp, creamy rice, peppers… Every bite you get a whole bunch of flavor and your mouth initially just POPS. As you chew down, your tastebuds start to decode what is going on. That saffron smell that floats into your nostrils and the heartiness of the Spanish rice… Man! We want more! Thanks, SPom.

Tomorrow is Something-on-a-Stick Day and Black Forest Cake Day!
