[FHCx317] National Pizza With Everything (Except Anchovies) Day/National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day

IT’S NATIONAL PIZZA WITH EVERYTHING (EXCEPT ANCHOVIES) DAY AND NATIONAL CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL DAY!

Everything?! Well, almost everything. For some reason, anchovies were left off of tonight’s menu by the powers that be. It wasn’t us. We’d eat anchovies.

We were able to swiftly pick up pizza at a local joint called Fresh Picked Pizza. They have all sorts of really tasty pizza, but we knew that we had one in mind to get fixed up for the evening.

2016-11-12-17-29-12

Do note the lack of anchovies.

2016-11-12-18-02-35

As a personal-size pizza, you can barely fit all those ingredients on there. Wonderful.

Today’s other holiday comes at a fortuitous time as AK is battling the Minnesotan common cold. (We’re sure SP will follow suit shortly.) Truly there is no better remedy for the insufferable symptoms quite like a homemade Chicken Soup. It warms the heart and soul and tummy. Thanks to SPom and SPad for always having the tastiest and most comforting chicken soup.

2016-11-12-17-23-33

Since SP moved out of his parents’ house, seeing a huge container of chicken soup like this is not infrequent.

2016-11-12-17-27-43

With carrots and matzo balls of course.

We feel comforted by our comfort foods.

Tomorrow is National Indian Pudding Day!

[FHCx306] National Calzone Day/National Deep Fried Clams Day/National Vinegar Day

IT’S NATIONAL CALZONE DAY, NATIONAL DEEP FRIED CLAMS DAY, AND NATIONAL VINEGAR DAY!

Riffing on this Ben Wyatt from Parks n Rec thing… if we were to make a restaurant to celebrate folded pizza, it would be specifically diet-friendly and located in areas nearby Los Angeles or San Diego. It would be called the Local LoCal Low-Cal Calzone Zone.

But for reals. Calzone Day was just established recently. Specifically, it was petitioned by Minsky’s Pizza on their 40th anniversary. So hooray for them!

Today also celebrates something we were worried about finding. There are always days like that. Sea Salt, which we visited for fried scallops, closed for the season at the end of October. Our next best bet was a place called Mucci’s, which is known for their deep fried – wait for it – pizza. Yeah. We were excited to see they also had clam fritti. But when we called at 4:45 to ensure they had our item, we were aghast to find they didn’t have any! As of November 1st, today was a menu change, and they don’t have ’em anymore.

We were in luck that a local joint by SP‘s old apartment had the goods for us. Here’s Mac’s Fish and Chips.

2016-11-01-17-37-28

2016-11-01-17-38-49

The menu on a white board. Too quaint not to share.

2016-11-01-17-40-11

“We don’t have soda. We have POP!” Thanks, Minnesota. SP approves.

2016-11-01-17-47-03

SP got half clams and half cod. Mmmmm those clam strips were AMAZING.

2016-11-01-17-47-07

AK went full-blown Minnesotan and got Walleye. Probably was from Lake Wobegon.

2016-11-01-18-06-27

And what’s this? Malt vinegar to have with our fish n chips? Such that we can enjoy National Vinegar Day? Perfect!

Despite the troubles, today was a success. We could’ve clammed up, but we got out of our shell and had an adventure.

Tomorrow is National Deviled Egg Day.

[FHCx285] National Sausage Pizza Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL SAUSAGE PIZZA DAY!

We’ll make this quick, as talking about food already makes us weary. See, tonight is the beginning of Yom Kippur, which is a fasting holiday. Sigh.

When we think of pizza with sausage, our first thought is not some delicious pizza with artisan Italian sausage. It’s the opposite of classy, with just hunks of sausage on a plain old pizza. We don’t want to offend those who love it as a topping, but really, our food holiday was epitomized by getting our pizza from AK‘s school cafeteria.

2016-10-11 16.56.39.jpg

And that’s that.

Tomorrow is National Gumbo Day! …when we can eat again.

[FHCx264] National Punch Day/National Pepperoni Pizza Day

Like an 8-year-old boy’s dream,

TODAY IS NATIONAL PUNCH DAY AND NATIONAL PEPPERONI PIZZA DAY!

You may have noticed that yesterday we didn’t preview today as PeppyPeepza day, and that’s because we honestly did not know. None of our sources had it listed, and SP received an e-mail from Pizza Hut with some something-or-other promotion regarding #NationalPepperoniPizzaDay. Go figure. So we made sure to pop one of these out of the fridge to enjoy!

2016-09-20-20-01-08

It’s really good, actually.

Anyway, a good thing to go with your pepperoni pizza is some punch. We did not know this, but punch is actually a loan word from Sanskrit. Can you even believe that? It means “five,” because it was a drink that had alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea. Definitely not what we think of these days. Maybe the water/sugar part…

But without going overboard, we used a water flavor enhancer thingy.

2016-09-20-19-31-222016-09-20-19-32-44

2016-09-20-19-33-13

Rum optional. We like it without.

Sweet sugar rush without all the sugar! Phew!

Tomorrow is National Pecan Cookie Day! (And SP‘s birthday…)

[FHCx258] National Cream-Filled Donut Day/National Eat a Hoagie Day

Fill ’em up!

IT’S NATIONAL CREAM-FILLED DONUT DAY AND NATIONAL EAT A HOAGIE DAY!

Whoever made today’s hoagiebration cheated. We already did hoagie day. But today you’re specifically supposed to eat the hoagie? I don’t know. What is important is that we give a shout out to our local buddies at Davanni’s. Twin Cities folks know that Davanni’s makes the heck out of some hoagies.

2016-09-14-18-11-53

The Chicken Parmigiana – grilled chicken breast with pizza sauce and cheese.

2016-09-14-18-11-59

Roast Beef classic hoagie with onions and lettuce and tomato.

So in addition to great pizza, there’s a great sandwich. And we didn’t even know it, but they were also celebrating National Eat a Hoagie Day and gave us $2 off the sandwiches! Thanks, Davanni’s.

It’s also very-specific-kind-of-donut day. Cream filled donuts, Bismarcks, Berliners, whatever you call them, have a great idea. Why waste space with having a hole in the center of your donut? Make it a pastry all the way through, and then shove some goo in there to make it even more tasty. We think Lund’s & Byerly’s does a great job with their variety in their bakery.

2016-09-14-19-41-382016-09-14-19-41-35

Fill yourself up on cream filled!

Tomorrow is National Linguini Day, National Double Cheeseburger Day, and National Creme de Menthe Day.

[FHCx249] National Cheese Pizza Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL CHEESE PIZZA DAY!

You know us. We like lots of stuff on our pizza. Veggies, meat… fruit? It’s all good. We rarely find ourselves sitting down to a cheese pizza anymore. But we can make today a special occasion.

This stage is entitled, “sprinkle dinkle”

And it was still really good!

Tomorrow is National Coffee Ice Cream Day.

[FHCx141] National Pizza Party Day/National Quiche Lorraine Day

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese party!

TODAY IS NATIONAL QUICHE LORRAINE DAY AND NATIONAL PIZZA PARTY DAY!

A man goes into a restaurant and sits down at a table for one. An attractive waitress stops by and asks him what he’d like to order. He looks up at her and says, “Can I get a quickie?” The waitress slaps him and storms off. Moments later, the waitress comes back, still fuming. She asks him sternly what he is going to order from the menu and he responds, “I’m still wondering if I can get a quickie.” She slaps him and threatens to go get her manager. Meanwhile, a man at a table nearby leans over to him and says, “Hey, buddy. It’s pronounced, ‘quiche.'”

Quiche Lorraine, named after the region instead of a person (for once), is a quiche with bacon. Now, some guy once said that Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche, which is simply untrue. What could possibly be wrong with a pastry crust, and then a whole bunch of eggy, custardy stuffing? Hold on a sec… my editor is telling me that Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche was a satirical novel about stereotypes of masculinity…

Anyway. Quiche. We don’t have the guts to make one at home except to bake one of Nancy’s.

2016-05-20 09.54.282016-05-20 10.00.19

Makes for a great breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack! Quiche.

Today, the third Friday in May, is also National Pizza Party Day! As we’ve made homemade peepza for previous food holidays, today was only made different by the extensive celebration that we were beholden to.

Happy pizza party day! A full workweek of homemade food holidays! Go SPAK!

[FHCx110] National Garlic Day/National Amaretto Day

Graaaalic.

TODAY IS NATIONAL GARLIC DAY AND NATIONAL AMARETTO DAY!

If SPAKville was a TV show, garlic would be in the main cast. Not a recurring character, but like a full-fledged, contracted-per-season actor. And he’d be the one that everyone liked working with. A lot.

We put garlic in and on everything. Pizza, pasta, stir fry, burgers, vegetables, everything. And we should definitely make a nod to The Stinking Rose, our favorite garlic-based restaurant, located on the West Coast. Everything from their Bagna Cauda to their garlic ice cream is fantastic. We wholly recommend you go sometime.

Tonight we celebrated twofold: with some homemade pizza, and with some home-roasted garlic thanks to cousin SPamy’s Chanukah gift for AK.

2016-04-19 17.07.02

Garlic should go on top of the sauce to stay put, but under the cheese so as to give happy garlic surprises.

2016-04-19 17.21.35

Add cheese, mushbooms, umyums, and some Hormel turkey pepperoni

2016-04-19 17.29.36

Peepza!

2016-04-19 17.21.43

This contraption is amazing.

We finished up dinner and somewhat begrudgingly dragged ourselves to observe today’s alcoholiday. SPom supplied us with some Disaronno and we made a Bailey’s Vanilla Silk.

2016-04-19 17.46.272016-04-19 17.53.05

As usual, SP thought it was not that great and AK thought it was okay. Movin’ on.

Tomorrow is National Pineapple Upside Down Cake Day and National Lima Bean Respect Day!

[FHCx96] National Deep Dish Pizza Day/National Raisin and Spice Bar Day/National Caramel Day

Today is the day we’ve been waiting for.

IT’S NATIONAL DEEP DISH PIZZA DAY AND RAISIN AND SPICE BAR DAY AND CARAMEL DAY!

When it comes to pizza, SP and AK agree that the deeper the dish, the better the pizza. Not to say that other kinds of pizza are bad. Just that if we had a choice between matzo pizza and Chicago-style, we’d be in the green-water, organized-crime, bean-art, Ferris-Bueller’s-Day-Off camp.

Now normally the first place that comes to mind when people talk about the Chicago Style Deep Dish is Giordano’s. And yes, we did just receive the holy gift of a Giordano’s in Uptown Minneapolis last summer. But since before then, we were given a bastion of pizza by the name of Pizzeria Pezzo. This gem in White Bear Lake does not get nearly the love that it should. From the same family that brought us Kowalski’s we get amazing pizza that reaffirms our love for saucedoughcheese every time we eat it. Pictures speak louder than these words.

2016-04-05 18.55.02

Our favorite small-plate appetizer: Baked Cipollini Onions and Whipped Cheese. Ughghghsoerugao;bna;eoiuenarg

2016-04-05 19.23.40

We order the Lincoln Park with pepperoni and extra garlic. It’s like a veggie works, but a million better.

2016-04-05 19.24.27

We only eat one slice each and take the rest home!

It was hard, after the amazing dinner, to bring ourselves to our other two food holidays. In order to make Raisin and Spice Bars, SP took a box of Duncan Hines spice cake mix, a can of pumpkin, a box of raisins, and put them to work!

2016-04-05 20.04.37

2016-04-05 20.10.49

No extra egg, oil, or anything. The pumpkin does all the heavy lifting.

2016-04-05 21.07.00

2016-04-05 21.26.17

A low-calorie baked treat!

2016-04-05 21.26.25

What’s this? A wild caramel appears!

2016-04-05 21.27.17

It’s super effective!

We had fun today.

Tomorrow we’ll take it a little easier by celebrating Caramel Corn Day.

[FHCx76] National Artichoke Hearts Day!

Eat your heart out!

IT’S NATIONAL ARTICHOKE HEARTS DAY!

SPAK are often asked where we get our sources for these food holidays. Since we are a good couple and can cite our sources, here’s a few of the places we’ve gotten them:

http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/

http://www.tfdutch.com/foodh.htm

http://bfy.tw/4n7Y

Between the many online sources, it took a lot of cross-referencing to confirm dates. For example, this Friday is Lacy Oatmeal Cookie Day, not to be confused with Oatmeal Cookie Day that happens later in the year. But some sources just don’t read carefully enough to post the nuances like that.

One of our print sources comes from Steff Deschenes and her book, Eat the Year (2014). Though sometimes she’ll write about one of the days while we celebrate both, it’s fun to see what tidbits she picks up! Today we learned about mafioso Ciro Terranova, a.k.a., The Artichoke King. Apparently this guy bought up all of the artichokes being shipped from the west coast to NYC, and then sold them at a huge profit margin. He used violence to coerce producers into being a part of his scheme. Fiendish!

While we thought about making entire artichokes to celebrate today, we instead took the opportunity to make some homemade pizza with artichoke hearts.

2016-03-16 16.55.02

These Green Mill pizza crusts are amazing. And super low calorie. A definite do-again for homemade pizza.

2016-03-16 17.01.49

All the bits that will go on our pizza!

2016-03-16 17.36.28

Mmmmm

If you haven’t had artichoke hearts on pizza, let today be the day you try it! Again, homemade strikes again for healthier option. This should be essentially the same as your average 12″ pizza from Domino’s or Pizza Hut. But you could literally eat two of these pizzas that we made, and it would still be fewer calories than your regular chain pizza. Go SPAK!

Tomorrow is National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day! I think there’s some sort of Catholic holiday that goes along with that…….
