[FHCx320] National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day/National Bundt Day/National Raisin Bran Cereal Day

Loading up!

IT’S NATIONAL SPICY HERMIT COOKIE DAY, NATIONAL BUNDT DAY, AND NATIONAL RAISIN BRAN CEREAL DAY!

Raisin Bran is a polarizing cereal, as we’ve found out from conversations with friends. SP tends to like raisins, and AK doesn’t. But even the bran part is something people don’t like. Weird.

Just look at how fun this cereal is!

Our next task was handling some Bundt. We are proud to present it as a regional creation with Jewish roots. Can you believe it? It’s based off of Gugelhupf, which was a Eastern European cake popular in Jewish communities. And then some dudes in St. Louis Park (which used to be referred to as “St. Jewish Park” – ya know, where SParents grew up) made this company called Nordic Ware and invented the Bundt pan based off this cake thing.

Everywhere you go in Minnesota, Bundt. Believe it. And Mrs. Wonderful’s are frequently available at Target. And they are wonderful.

When picking out which flavor to use today, AK said “Obviously Cinnamon Swirl.” So I guess there you go.

Super duper good.

The last part of today was something we’d never heard of: Spicy Hermit? What? Like, spicy hot? Hermit like a crab, or a person hiding out somewhere? Who came up with this crap?

New Englanders in the 1880s, like half of these dang food holiday foods.

Imagine an oatmeal raisin cookie. Take out the oatmeal, but still keep the cookie soft and chewy. Then throw on a whole bunch of spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, etc. That’s a spicy hermit. We nabbed this recipe from The Spice House to make our own.

2016-11-15-16-47-59

Dry ingredients with a bunch of spices.

2016-11-15-16-56-52

Cream butter with sugar.

2016-11-15-17-02-04

Add in some beaten eggs and mix it up. This looks super cool, doesn’t it?

2016-11-15-17-08-35

Combine with the dry stuff.

2016-11-15-19-27-472016-11-15-19-41-31

Chewy. Could’ve had more spices in them, but likely the recipe was made “mild” so that people wouldn’t run screaming to the hills. An interesting cookie, but not our favorite.

[FHCx260] National Guacamole Day/National Cinnamon Raisin Bread Day

Holy guacamole!

TODAY IS NATIONAL GUACAMOLE DAY AND NATIONAL CINNAMON RAISIN BREAD DAY!

It’s Friday night, and so we made cinnamon raisin bread a special moment. Thanks to Lund’s & Byerly’s, we got ourselves a cinnamon raisin challah! Challah is the traditional Shabbat (Friday night/Saturday) food: a braided bread. And theirs is very tasty.

2016-09-16-17-29-492016-09-16-17-37-06

Dinner itself had to involve some guacamole. Both SP and AK are fans of getting guac on their Chipotle bowls, and we like recreating that at home. We’ve shown you a whole bunch of SP‘s steak bowls over the last year. Tonight was no different.

2016-09-16-17-28-18

Steak in a pan, cooked a la AK (rare, with lots of garlic, onion, and pepper)

Steak on rice is step one.

Next up is to take one of these amazing guacamole pouches…

2016-09-16-17-37-01

And plop it on!

We really like Wholly Guacamole‘s minis. Their spicy guacamole is the real deal. Since avocados are running out of season in September, it’s hard to find good ones. And we are certainly happy to have these pre-portioned minis around to help us out.

[FHCx121] National Oatmeal Cookie Day/National Raisin Day

Guess what we did?

TODAY IS NATIONAL OATMEAL COOKIE DAY AND NATIONAL RAISIN DAY!

Why did the powers-that-be make this two separate holidays? It’s very obvious what we’re supposed to do.

We made oatmeal raisin cookies! SURPRISE!

We looked at a weight watchers recipe, and it wasn’t all that light. It used 3/4 cup of regular butter and a cup of sugar… It’s kind of amusing to see some of the recipes that make it through the editing floor of WW. But at the very least, it’s easy to customize. We made this a little lighter, and we are certainly glad we did. Getting someone else’s oatmeal raisin cookie would have been much more uncontrollable.

[FHCx96] National Deep Dish Pizza Day/National Raisin and Spice Bar Day/National Caramel Day

Today is the day we’ve been waiting for.

IT’S NATIONAL DEEP DISH PIZZA DAY AND RAISIN AND SPICE BAR DAY AND CARAMEL DAY!

When it comes to pizza, SP and AK agree that the deeper the dish, the better the pizza. Not to say that other kinds of pizza are bad. Just that if we had a choice between matzo pizza and Chicago-style, we’d be in the green-water, organized-crime, bean-art, Ferris-Bueller’s-Day-Off camp.

Now normally the first place that comes to mind when people talk about the Chicago Style Deep Dish is Giordano’s. And yes, we did just receive the holy gift of a Giordano’s in Uptown Minneapolis last summer. But since before then, we were given a bastion of pizza by the name of Pizzeria Pezzo. This gem in White Bear Lake does not get nearly the love that it should. From the same family that brought us Kowalski’s we get amazing pizza that reaffirms our love for saucedoughcheese every time we eat it. Pictures speak louder than these words.

2016-04-05 18.55.02

Our favorite small-plate appetizer: Baked Cipollini Onions and Whipped Cheese. Ughghghsoerugao;bna;eoiuenarg

2016-04-05 19.23.40

We order the Lincoln Park with pepperoni and extra garlic. It’s like a veggie works, but a million better.

2016-04-05 19.24.27

We only eat one slice each and take the rest home!

It was hard, after the amazing dinner, to bring ourselves to our other two food holidays. In order to make Raisin and Spice Bars, SP took a box of Duncan Hines spice cake mix, a can of pumpkin, a box of raisins, and put them to work!

2016-04-05 20.04.37

2016-04-05 20.10.49

No extra egg, oil, or anything. The pumpkin does all the heavy lifting.

2016-04-05 21.07.00

2016-04-05 21.26.17

A low-calorie baked treat!

2016-04-05 21.26.25

What’s this? A wild caramel appears!

2016-04-05 21.27.17

It’s super effective!

We had fun today.

Tomorrow we’ll take it a little easier by celebrating Caramel Corn Day.

[FHCx84] National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

A respite from the double-duty days this week:

IT’S NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISIN DAY!

SP has always been a fan of raisins. Soft, chewy, sugary lumps of purple… But some people, like SPam and AK, are not so much fans. Across the world, even, people don’t like raisins. What gives?

Well that’s when companies like Nestle or Brach’s come along and say “HEY! We never shoulda fired George Newman! Let’s cover raisins with chocolate!” And there you have it. Add chocolate and suddenly we’re cool.

[FHCx43] National Plum Pudding Day

Feeling a little bit international?

TODAY IS NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY!

Plum pudding isn’t actually made from plums. Go figure. In the pre-Victorian era, everything raisin-related was just called “plums.” That makes a lot of sense. Thanks, England.

Instead, it’s this strange, gelatinous raisiny British/Irish pudding. Meant to be ingested on Christmas, this pudding has been given its official day in February. Because that makes a lot of sense, too.

We initially planned on making our own starting last August and letting it steep for months. Then we forgot. Regardless, here we are with our plum pudding, thanks to Walkers.

2016-02-12 19.01.47

I’m sure the homemade kind looks more appealing.

It’s kind of like a fruit compote mixed with a sticky toffee pudding. The sweetness from all the dried fruits is made more intense by being super-hot. It’s kind of hard to eat as all of the small pieces come apart. Not one of the best desserts we’ve had. Oh well!

Tortellini Tomorrow!
