TODAY IS NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY AND NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY!
We don’t really get whiskey sour. Whiskey with a little bit of lemon and sugar just makes it taste more like whiskey. Eh. We were out to dinner with SParents at Pezzo and so we could give the rest of it to them!
We did get to cleanse our palette with some stuff we love, though: ice cream! Ice cream summer never ends! Well, it kind of does pretty soon, but we’re in denial!
Invented in 1904, the banana split takes nature’s best fruit and pairs it with the best cold dessert. Here is the banana split AK made in its most beautiousness.
Halo Top is great.
Put the ice cream inside and cover in whipped cream
Some chopped pecans for fun.
We could probably eat these all day.
Tomorrow is National Cherry Popsicle Day!
Because “cake” wasn’t enough…
IT’S NATIONAL SPONGE CAKE DAY!
Sponge cake doesn’t exactly seem all that exciting. Buuuuut, it’s got some good history. Most cakes were yeasted throughout humankind’s baking. The first historical record of a non-yeast cake was in 1615 by a guy who wrote a book about how to be a good housewife (i.e., a book about recipes and remedies). Yeah. This guy. This book.
And to this day, sponge cake is confused with angel food cake or pound cake. Sponge cakes contain whole eggs, and the leavening only comes from the egg whites. Chiffon cakes don’t have the egg whites beaten separately and employ a bunch of oil. Angel food cakes have only the egg whites and a higher proportion of egg white to flour.
Thanks, Mrs. Freshley!
But you’ve gotta dress it up. SP‘s sponge cake with reddi wip, raspberries and bananas, topped with a bit of hot fudge.
AK‘s sponge cake with… well… stuff on it. I guess.
Tomorrow is National Waffle Day and National Peach Pie Day!
Had enough of raspberries?
IT’S NATIONAL RASPBERRIES ‘N’ CREAM DAY!
[Fruit] and cream has been done before. Twice this year. And raspberries have been featured here, here, and here, with another raspberry day coming this Thursday. So now we put raspberries in cream.
Tomorrow is National Zucchini Day and National Frozen Custard Day!
The good kind of catfishing.
IT’S NATIONAL CATFISH DAY AND NATIONAL STRAWBERRY PARFAIT DAY!
This afternoon, we made a similar parfait to our last Parfait Day. Fresh strawberries are a great addition to any pudding/cream-related treat.
Some chocofudge pudding, instant and easy.
Make some layers alternating with pudding, whipped cream, and strawberries (kinda hard to see the strawberry layer). Yummy!
For catfish, we had to seek out one of our favorite local restaurants, Brasa. Here in Minnesota, we don’t get the Eastern-Asian-sized goonch catfish that are literally large enough to attack and eat water buffalo.
However, Brasa makes a fantastic fried channel catfish that you ought to try! It’s moist and flaky, and the frying is just perfect on it. Catfish flavor is very mild and they’re a terrific source of Vitamin D! (The more you know!)
It’s good to have a unique, different food holiday after a week of generic stuff like pecan sandies.
Tomorrow is National Chocolate Pudding Day!
Sweet with sweet.
IT’S NATIONAL PEACHES AND CREAM DAY!
What a great way to open the door into summer with a summertime treat of peaches and cream. Many fruits have sweet match-ups. Chocolate and strawberries, apples and cinnamon, pumpkin and… nutmeg? Whatever. Peaches and cream is a jewel of the south, so we picked out the most Georgia Peach lookin’ peach we could find.
Slice it up.
Mound of whipped cream. Boom!
A refreshing taste of summer! Go enjoy some.
Tomorrow is National Chocolate Eclair Day and National Onion Rings Day!
In honor of Donkey,
TODAY IS NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PARFAIT DAY!
We weren’t sure on the official definition of a parfait, so we did our best. Some parfaits have a layer of cake, like a trifle, and others use some sort of gelatin stuff. Some use granola and berries. We went chocolate, cream, bananas. Because there’s very little that’s better than all those. And everybody loves parfait!
So let’s get to the goods.
Incredibly low calorie and still tasty!
Chocolate and cream and banana and chocolate and cream and banana!
Hope you enjoy all your layers today!
Tomorrow is National Truffles Day.
