TODAY IS NATIONAL STRAWBERRY CREAM PIE DAY AND NATIONAL DRINK BEER DAY!
Beer. Ben Franklin’s BFF. With all sorts of varieties: hoppy, malty, dark, light, etc., there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re really cool, then you get to Surly’s Brewer’s Table where you can enjoy a delicious tasting menu with beer pairings. You won’t think of beer the same way. (We did this on SP‘s birthday and it was great!)
Today we celebrated by having this Sioux City Birch Beer. It’s not beer in the traditional sense, but it sure is in the title!
Well if beer isn’t your thing, maybe dessert is?
SP‘s “contact” at Baker’s Square says that currently Strawberry Cream Pies are out because strawberries are “out of season.” This is coming from the same place that serves strawberry-rhubarb pie to octogenarians year-long. Trips to the grocery stores nearby were not fruitful (or creamful) either. So we had to make it at home!
AK mixed up some strawberry Jell-O and some vanilla pudding, and made this little pie-lets. Top with strawberry and cream and there you have it.
Look at that beautiful color!
Tomorrow is… ugh… Coffee Day…
TODAY IS NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY AND NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY!
We don’t really get whiskey sour. Whiskey with a little bit of lemon and sugar just makes it taste more like whiskey. Eh. We were out to dinner with SParents at Pezzo and so we could give the rest of it to them!
We did get to cleanse our palette with some stuff we love, though: ice cream! Ice cream summer never ends! Well, it kind of does pretty soon, but we’re in denial!
Invented in 1904, the banana split takes nature’s best fruit and pairs it with the best cold dessert. Here is the banana split AK made in its most beautiousness.
Halo Top is great.
Put the ice cream inside and cover in whipped cream
Some chopped pecans for fun.
We could probably eat these all day.
Tomorrow is National Cherry Popsicle Day!
Two amazing things…
IT’S NATIONAL ICE CREAM PIE DAY!
Baking a pie in mid summer is pretty rough. The house gets all warm and smells like falling asleep… Ahem, where were we… Ah, yes, pie! And ice cream! Cold, delicious ice cream, formed into a pie. SPom put this beauty together for us.
This has quickly become Minnesota’s most wanted. Sometimes at Whole Foods, sometimes at Kowalski’s… It’s pretty great.
You’ve seen this before. Helps to make it thicken up.
Such a fun time.
Tomorrow is National Soft Ice Cream Day, National Potato Day, and National Hot & Spicy Food Day.
Hey! How come I didn’t get a little umbrella?
IT’S NATIONAL DAIQUIRI DAY!
Here in Minnesota we have moved up from Excessive Heat Watch to Excessive Heat Warning for the next two days. When the air temperature is over 100 and the humidity/dew point/air pressure makes it feel more like 115, it gets very unpleasant. Don’t go outside. Usually, they’ll tell people if they don’t have AC to go to a place like the mall.
Even though we have AC, we wanted to get some activity in today, so we went to the Mall of America to cool off and have a daiquiri.
Strawberry Island Daiquiri!
Cold and refreshing, and not too boozy. Super sugary to make you feel like you’ve got a little more energy.
Tomorrow is National Lollipop Day!
TODAY IS NATIONAL STRAWBERRY SUNDAE DAY AND NATIONAL MACARONI DAY!
In Japan, today is Tanabata, the Star Festival. Basically, a galactic farmer is separated from his love, a cosmic weaving princess, and they get to cross the Milky Way once a year (today) to meet. How sweet, right? Well, what would two East Asian people have on a date? Probably Strawberry Sundaes and Macaroni and Cheese.
Our Mac ‘n Chee came from our trip to Revival yesterday. We got it to go at the end of our meal so we could enjoy it today. We love how peppery and real cheesy it is. Normally when served at the restaurant, it comes in a little crock with that golden brown on top that makes your heart melt.
A nice small portion for us to share today.
After our dinner, before we went to see Swiss Army Man, we had our strawberry sundaes built from these very cute Haagen-Dazs minis.
It’s a little less than half a cup of ice cream. Helps to keep the portion manageable.
A heart for extra love.
Tomorrow is National Chocolate with Almonds Day and National Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Omelette Day.
The good kind of catfishing.
IT’S NATIONAL CATFISH DAY AND NATIONAL STRAWBERRY PARFAIT DAY!
This afternoon, we made a similar parfait to our last Parfait Day. Fresh strawberries are a great addition to any pudding/cream-related treat.
Some chocofudge pudding, instant and easy.
Make some layers alternating with pudding, whipped cream, and strawberries (kinda hard to see the strawberry layer). Yummy!
For catfish, we had to seek out one of our favorite local restaurants, Brasa. Here in Minnesota, we don’t get the Eastern-Asian-sized goonch catfish that are literally large enough to attack and eat water buffalo.
However, Brasa makes a fantastic fried channel catfish that you ought to try! It’s moist and flaky, and the frying is just perfect on it. Catfish flavor is very mild and they’re a terrific source of Vitamin D! (The more you know!)
It’s good to have a unique, different food holiday after a week of generic stuff like pecan sandies.
Tomorrow is National Chocolate Pudding Day!
Dessert and drinks!
TODAY IS NATIONAL STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE DAY AND NATIONAL BOURBON DAY!
Strawberry shortcake is different from angel food cake. Don’t even try to make that leap. According to the purists, that is. Basically you start a cake (flour, sugar, milk, eggs, baking stuff) and blend with butter until the mixture is like corn meal. Then you dollop some spoonfuls and make li’l cakes like you would make biscuits. Strawberries help make this cake be better than it is!
BTW, the largest strawberry shortcake ever made was in the Philippines. It weight over 21,000 pounds.
We picked up a strawberry shortcake at Target:
Wait a sec, gluten-free?! Take it back!
Nah. It was pretty good anyway.
And our choice of bourbon for the evening:
Tomorrow is National Lobster Day!
