[FHCx339] National Cookie Day

IT’S NATIONAL COOKIE DAY!

AK bought these, so this is what we did for cookie day:

2016-12-04 08.51.49.jpg

Just kidding. Well, we did eat them, and they did taste like sugar cookies, but still! We have to bake cookies. We weren’t going to go completely from scratch, as we have on many other cookie days, because we had this mix sitting around from a long time ago.

[FHCx327] National Cranberry Relish Day

IT’S NATIONAL CRANBERRY RELISH DAY!

Relish, not sauce. Relish is uncooked; that’s the main difference. This Thanksgiving-y food is classic for the berries that are actually in season (unlike some food holidays) and is often served alongside turkey. We used a recipe from Ocean Spray to make ours.

2016-11-18-20-07-53

Cut up the orange and leave the peel on.

2016-11-18-20-08-55

Food processor! Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

2016-11-18-20-14-45

Take the mush and pour some sugar on it.

2016-11-18-20-15-49

Beautiful color.

SP put some on his turkey sandwich for lunch today.

Tomorrow is another multi-day: Cashew Day, Eat a Cranberry Day, and Espresso Day.

[FHCx309] National Candy Day

If you didn’t binge on all of it already…

TODAY IS NATIONAL CANDY DAY!

If you’re a grown-ass adult, you likely bought a bunch of candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters this past Monday. And why wasn’t Halloween National Candy Day? Or National Pumpkin Day for that matter? Probably because we have a whole bunch leftover, and if it has lasted you for 4 days, then you need a national holiday to give you the confidence to take it all out.

Just remember, you can still give it away days after Halloween. You don’t have to eat all of it.

[FHCx303] National Oatmeal Day

Make a meal of it!

IT’S NATIONAL OATMEAL DAY!

There are a lot of health benefits to eating oatmeal. But it must be the case that a lot of those benefits go away when you turn to instant oatmeal. Not that it’s bad, but just… you know…

We were lucky that SPom had just made these unbelievably delicious apple oatmeal bars. Though we weren’t there for the baking, we did get this image as the recipe…

001

That’s right. Cups upon cups of sugar and 2 sticks of butter.

[FHCx266] National Ice Cream Cone Day/National White Chocolate Day

Dessert!

IT’S NATIONAL ICE CREAM CONE DAY AND NATIONAL WHITE CHOCOLATE DAY!

Prose by SPuncle SPicky: “White chocolate is NOT chocolate.  It’s just congealed cacao grease with a little — I guess I’ll go that far — chocolate taste.”

Yes, there’s something weird about white chocolate. There are very few things that have white chocolate that are worth going out of your way for. We even disguised our white chocolate consumption in this autumny bread pudding from Lund’s & Byerly’s:

But we also have to say hello to autumn by waving goodbye to summer with one last treat: an ice cream cone!

Raz’s, the local place

[FHCx255] National Hot Cross Buns

One a penny, two a penny…

IT’S NATIONAL HOT CROSS BUNS DAY!

…in September! You can’t be further than 6 months away from the holiday where this food typically shows up. Jesus-y Easter stuff, aside, you can’t go wrong with baked, iced stuff. But since we’re so far from Easter season, good luck finding this in a store! We had to get into the thick of it with a recipe from Ree Drummond.

2016-09-11-12-43-47

2016-09-11-12-46-55

2 cups whole milk, 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 cup sugar. Bring it up to warm, and then let it cool down a while.

2016-09-11-13-24-23

Yeast!

2016-09-11-13-25-26

Flour!

2016-09-11-13-27-21

Mix it up into a sticky doughy thingy.

2016-09-11-13-28-15

Give it about 60 minutes.

2016-09-11-14-33-40

Put it into a mixer with baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

2016-09-11-14-35-28

Mixture of sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg

2016-09-11-14-38-18

Flatten out the dough a little.

2016-09-11-14-39-46

Pour part of the sugar mixture on and then fold it up.

2016-09-11-14-43-32

It’s got all the goodies inside.

2016-09-11-14-43-42

Roll up some golf ball sized guys.

2016-09-11-14-45-52

Baking sheet with parchment paper. Then let them rise for about an hour.

2016-09-11-12-52-39

A little glaze out of egg white and milk

2016-09-11-15-43-44

Brush the glaze on. Bake em for 20 minutes at 400.

2016-09-11-16-32-04

They turned out much more like hot cross biscuits…

2016-09-11-12-54-12

Icing is egg whites, milk, and lots of powdered sugar.

2016-09-11-18-56-402016-09-11-18-58-43

We are exhausted from making these. And now we have several too many. After all that, we ended up using the icing to drizzle more than just the crosses, because really… this is just about eating icing-y dough. Woop!

Tomorrow is National Chocolate Milkshake Day

[FHCx245] National Gyros Day/National Cherry Popover Day

2/3 of the way through the year!

IT’S NATIONAL GYROS DAY AND NATIONAL CHERRY POPOVER DAY!

Alright, let’s get this out of the way. We made cherry popovers with the same recipe that we used for blueberry popovers and raspberry popovers. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a great recipe.

2016-09-01 20.39.37

2016-09-01 20.43.36

3 eggs, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, 1 cup flour, 1 tsp vanilla

2016-09-01 20.53.38

Drop in cherries and cinnamon sugar.

2016-09-01 21.18.53.jpg

3-dimensional!

Delightful! But we know what we’re really here for. It would be foolish to say that SPAK has a favorite restaurant. However… Holy Land is one of those places that we could never get enough of. Ever. Yes, the place that was just on Triple D. Yes, the place that used to print this on their hummus.

Garlic_b2fca3_1204383

This Mediterranean restaurant nails everything they do, from Gyros to Schawarma to Falafel. Just awesome stuff.

2016-09-01 18.22.50

One of the few forms of shaving that SP deems reasonable.

2016-09-01 18.37.36

SP likes to get the Gyro Lovers’ Combo, which has beef/lamb gyro and the chicken gyro.

2016-09-01 18.37.46

AK loves the chicken gyro, with its delicious spices and onions.

2016-09-01 18.41.25

Stuff it in a pita and boom. You’re good to go.

2016-09-01 18.59.38

They even gave us these cakes for free this time because they love us at Holy Land!

Seriously, if you’re in the Twin Cities, go to Holy Land as soon as you can. It’s a pilgrimage worth making.

Tomorrow is National Blueberry Popsicle Day!
