[FHCx353] National Roast Suckling Pig Day

IT’S NATIONAL ROAST SUCKLING PIG DAY!

Cultures across the world have all independently found that young pigs make for quite the roast. Pig is one of the earliest animals domesticated for slaughter, so it was only a matter of time before we figured out the age thing. Suckling pigs’ skin ends up being very tender and the meat is almost in a state of gelatinousness. Plus, you can roast the whole thing at once, because at 2-6 weeks of age, these guys aren’t too huge yet.

Well SP has been wanting to try the Fidel’s Capitalist Pig Roast at Chino Latino for a long time. Chino used to be the place for SP and his friends to go for late night happy hour ($1 tacos!) when he was still in college. Then he started having to get up at 6 in the morning and he didn’t get to go anymore. At the bottom of the menu, there was always this tempting item:

So we gathered up a total of 10 people and made plans for this pig roast. It was quite the party.

They even printed this up on the menus for us!

[FHCx340] National Sacher Torte Day

TODAY IS NATIONAL SACHER TORTE DAY!

A sacher torte is named after the same guy/family as the Hotel Sacher in Vienna, and his name is Franz Sacher. Austrian, yet Jewish, this guy was 16 years old when he invented the dessert after a kitchen meltdown in Prince Metternich’s court. Ah, Viennese royalty…

But what is it? Chocolate cake? That’s it? NO! It’s a super dense chocolate cake with a dark chocolate finish that obscures a thin layer of delectable apricot jam. That’s a cake we can get behind. Or… a cake we can put in our faces. Thanks to Black Forest Inn, we didn’t end up having to make one today. Theirs was delicious!

Served with a little cup o’ whipped cream. See that cute layer of apricot?

Tomorrow is National Gazpacho Day.

[FHCx322] National Baklava Day/National Homemade Bread Day

Put on your balaclava!

IT’S NATIONAL BAKLAVA DAY AND NATIONAL HOMEMADE BREAD DAY!

Baklava is a sophisticated dessert. Much of our Mediterranean friends disagree that it’s anything special, but I mean really. We’re simple people. We would eat a block of chocolate and it would be amazing. Backpedaling, we’re not saying chocolate isn’t sophisticated… just that Baklava has layers.

Layers of filo dough and chopped nuts! It’s all held together by a very particular honey-ish syrup that is characteristic of any baklava.

Our favorite restaurant that serves Baklava is Holy Land, as in, National Gyros Day Holy Land. In addition to our lovely dinner of gyro, we got to take a gander at:

Porque no los dos? We had to try both. The chocolate drizzled one was excellent.

Another favorite thing of ours to eat is bread. Bread bread bread. All the time. It’s something about our genetics that predisposes us to a love of bread. We see bread in our dreams. We even saw a baguette in a zoo once. The sign read, “Bread in captivity.”

Today’s homemade bread was courtesy of the amazingest baker, SPad. This is the guy who used to not be able to find shirts that would fit because his arms were so huge from kneading dough all the time (back when he worked as a baker). These days he focuses on a few breads and is very modest about how amazing his bread really is. His best work is the sourdough:

[FHCx280] National Noodle Day

IT’S NATIONAL NOODLE DAY!

So many options! And man, do we love them all! You could go Eastern Europe with Beef Stroganoff… or Italian with frankly any pasta… or how about East Asian? Yeah! Let’s do that! Let’s get some Ramen. Real, tasty ramen. Not just Maruchan.

We took a trip to Masu, one of the Japanese delights of the Twin Cities. We would have loved to go to United Noodles today, but they’re only open 11-6 each day, and we wouldn’t have made it in time. Still, Masu really hits the spot.

Some nikuman to start us off. Mmmm buns.

2016-10-06-17-38-02

And some very tasty duck gyoza.

2016-10-06-17-51-03

SPom and AK both ordered gyudon, which is an amazing beef and rice bowl.

2016-10-06-17-50-56

SP got the Beef Short Rib and Kimchi Ramen. That’s a poached egg in the bottom left and it simply turned to mush.

2016-10-06-17-51-06

SPad ordered Yakisoba, a really awesome Japanese noodle dish. For those not in the know, soba is a buckwheat noodle.

Rammmmmmen.

However you spin your noodles, happy noodle day!

[FHCx262] National Cheeseburger Day

Deja vu…

IT’S NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY!

Well on Thursday we celebrated double cheeseburger day. Today celebrates the singular. The original. But we aren’t going to do your regular old McDonald’s.

We’re Minnesotans. We believe in the Juicy Lucy. We went to Blue Door Pub.

The Juicy Lucy is a Minnesota invention, where cheese is stuffed into the burger. Techniques vary, and there is dispute regarding what restaurant actually created it. But Blue Door has one of SP‘s favorite burgers, so we had to do it.

Behold, the Merriam Park burger. Burger stuffed with blue cheese, bacon, and garlic, and topped with a red currant jelly.

Look at all that good stuff inside.

2016-09-18-18-03-15

Oh, and here’s AK‘s burger, the NeuFrenchy: swiss cheese, prime rib, mushrooms, swiss mornay sauce, and onion jam. Served with au jus!

Horribly unkosher and horribly delicious. It’s like we’ve taken everything we can from the cow and made it tasty together.

Tomorrow is National Butterscotch Pudding Day!

[FHCx259] National Linguine Day/National Creme de Menthe Day/National Double Cheeseburger Day

IT’S NATIONAL LINGUINE DAY, NATIONAL CREME DE MENTHE DAY, AND NATIONAL DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER DAY!

It’s hard to place which of these we would enjoy most. AK definitely would go for the pasta, and SP would certainly like the double serving of meat… We love both.

Linguine is the pasta that you have when you want spaghetti, but slightly flatter. These little tongues are good at carrying sauce which, let’s face it, is the real reason we’re eating pasta to begin with. Well thanks to Buca, which supplied SP with beautiful birthday coupons, we had some linguine on Tuesday and had some leftovers today.

2016-09-13-19-11-50

We built our own with linguine, marinara, mushrooms, artichokes, onions, and poached garlic. With meatballs of course.

2016-09-13-19-40-24

And look at this cute cake they made for SP! (Those aren’t actually noodles)

Alright, palette cleanser time. Let’s have a mint. A menthe.

2016-09-15-16-39-532016-09-15-16-41-31

Lastly, we took a trip down to SParents (since we haven’t been there in a while) to have some burgers. SPom’s hamburgers are awesome. She has some kind of magic she makes them with, because she uses a 95% lean beef – not traditionally what you’d use for a juicy hamburger – and mixes in pureed… MUSHROOMS! It thickens out the patty and they are super tender. But then she gives SP all the credit because of his grilling skills. Let’s just say that SP is so badass at grilling that he did the whole thing in the rain tonight!

[FHCx258] National Cream-Filled Donut Day/National Eat a Hoagie Day

Fill ’em up!

IT’S NATIONAL CREAM-FILLED DONUT DAY AND NATIONAL EAT A HOAGIE DAY!

Whoever made today’s hoagiebration cheated. We already did hoagie day. But today you’re specifically supposed to eat the hoagie? I don’t know. What is important is that we give a shout out to our local buddies at Davanni’s. Twin Cities folks know that Davanni’s makes the heck out of some hoagies.

2016-09-14-18-11-53

The Chicken Parmigiana – grilled chicken breast with pizza sauce and cheese.

2016-09-14-18-11-59

Roast Beef classic hoagie with onions and lettuce and tomato.

So in addition to great pizza, there’s a great sandwich. And we didn’t even know it, but they were also celebrating National Eat a Hoagie Day and gave us $2 off the sandwiches! Thanks, Davanni’s.

It’s also very-specific-kind-of-donut day. Cream filled donuts, Bismarcks, Berliners, whatever you call them, have a great idea. Why waste space with having a hole in the center of your donut? Make it a pastry all the way through, and then shove some goo in there to make it even more tasty. We think Lund’s & Byerly’s does a great job with their variety in their bakery.

Fill yourself up on cream filled!
