TODAY IS NATIONAL BAVARIAN CREAM PIE DAY!
We had some experience with a faux bavarian cream, but we wanted a serious undertaking today. Real bavarian cream is a custard, frequently thickened with gelatin. The regular serving of it is to mold it into a frustum shape and served on its own. But once the Americans get their hands on anything… well, then it just becomes another pastry cream to fill stuff with. Like a pie! We grabbed a recipe from AllRecipes and got to work.
Pie needs a crust!
Mix up the sugar, cornstarch, and egg in a mixing bowl.
Add scalded milk and softened gelatin (couple packs of gelatin and cold water)
AK got inventive to do this double-boiler system. Big pot has hot water, top pot has the custard mixture.
Take out the custard pot to let it cool, but mix in 3/4 cup of ice cream while it’s still hot.
Whip up a bunch of whipped cream.
Use about 3/4 of the whipped cream to fold in to the pie, saving the rest for the top of the pie.
The pie, before we let it set.
Topped with the rest of the whipped cream.
It mostly tasted like cream. Next time maybe we’ll add more vanilla or almond flavor just to see what happens.
This is only the beginning of a tri-pie week when we have National Lemon Creme Pie Day on Tuesday and National Pie Day (wrong) on Thursday. But in the meantime, tomorrow is National French Toast Day!
IT’S NATIONAL SUNDAE DAY!
Any kind you want. It doesn’t have to be hot fudge or strawberry. Just ice cream and toppings. Usually whipped cream, some sort of sauce or syrup, maybe some fruit. Sprinkles? If you got ’em.
Tomorrow is National Chicken Soup for the Soul Day and National Pizza With Everything (Except Anchovies) Day!
IT’S NATIONAL VANILLA CUPCAKE DAY!
We honestly would never pick out a vanilla cupcake if left to our own devices. Not that we don’t like vanilla flavors, it’s just… there are usually more exciting kinds of cupcakes to have.
But can we take a sec to give Target some major rep? Super Targets are already amazing, but they’re really starting to nail it in their bakery. Today was no exclusion. Thanks, Target, for having some real deal tasties.
Tomorrow is National Sundae Day!
TODAY IS NATIONAL BANANA SPLIT DAY AND NATIONAL WHISKEY SOUR DAY!
We don’t really get whiskey sour. Whiskey with a little bit of lemon and sugar just makes it taste more like whiskey. Eh. We were out to dinner with SParents at Pezzo and so we could give the rest of it to them!
We did get to cleanse our palette with some stuff we love, though: ice cream! Ice cream summer never ends! Well, it kind of does pretty soon, but we’re in denial!
Invented in 1904, the banana split takes nature’s best fruit and pairs it with the best cold dessert. Here is the banana split AK made in its most beautiousness.
Halo Top is great.
Put the ice cream inside and cover in whipped cream
Some chopped pecans for fun.
We could probably eat these all day.
Tomorrow is National Cherry Popsicle Day!
Two amazing things…
IT’S NATIONAL ICE CREAM PIE DAY!
Baking a pie in mid summer is pretty rough. The house gets all warm and smells like falling asleep… Ahem, where were we… Ah, yes, pie! And ice cream! Cold, delicious ice cream, formed into a pie. SPom put this beauty together for us.
This has quickly become Minnesota’s most wanted. Sometimes at Whole Foods, sometimes at Kowalski’s… It’s pretty great.
You’ve seen this before. Helps to make it thicken up.
Such a fun time.
Tomorrow is National Soft Ice Cream Day, National Potato Day, and National Hot & Spicy Food Day.
Starting to feel like a broken record…
IT’S NATIONAL VANILLA CUSTARD DAY!
Because frozen custard day and chocolate custard day weren’t enough, here’s vanilla. But we decided to do something a little different since both of the above were the traditional food item. Tonight we dined at Supatra’s Thai in St. Paul, one of our Thai favorites, and we made sure to order some Thai custard for dessert (with sticky rice). It’s not exactly vanilla, but it’s got coconut and milk and such in it, which makes it fun.
It was almost like just an egg omelette. We enjoyed the sticky rice most.
Tomorrow is National Ice Cream Pie Day! Because we haven’t had enough ice cream this summer!
Ice cream can be enjoyed in multiple forms!
TODAY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM SANDWICH DAY!
All around the world, people enjoy different variations of ice cream sandwiches. Here in the US we get the classic cookie kind (patented in 1963) or even a Choco Taco. In Vietnam, they have a thing called banh mi kep kem, where they use a banh mi bread and stuff it with ice cream and top it with peanuts. Brilliant. In Singapore, they eat potong, where two wafers hold together a block of ice cream, cut from a HUGE LOG OF ICE CREAM. WHAT EVEN.
As Minnesotans, we had to go Kemp’s today.
And we brought the rest out for our neighborhood’s National Night Out gathering! …along with the leftover raspberry cake from Sunday. What great neighbors we are.
Tomorrow is National Watermelon Day and National Grab Some Nuts Day.
