[FHCx266] National Ice Cream Cone Day/National White Chocolate Day

Prose by SPuncle SPicky: “White chocolate is NOT chocolate.  It’s just congealed cacao grease with a little — I guess I’ll go that far — chocolate taste.”

Yes, there’s something weird about white chocolate. There are very few things that have white chocolate that are worth going out of your way for. We even disguised our white chocolate consumption in this autumny bread pudding from Lund’s & Byerly’s:

But we also have to say hello to autumn by waving goodbye to summer with one last treat: an ice cream cone!

Tomorrow is National Great American Pot Pie Day.

[FHCx237] National Waffle Day/National Peach Pie Day

Today’s Pearls Before Swine, by Stephan Pastis

Pearls is one of SP‘s favorite comics, so he was delighted to get this comic via e-mail from SPom this morning. Waffles are great and they do deserve their own day. Not specific waffle types, but just waffles in general. Whether you eat Eggos on the run or you take the time to go somewhere tasty like Black Coffee & Waffle Bar, today is a day to sit back and enjoy the syrupy, battery goodness that is the waffle.

SP bought this waffle maker for AK as a present. The mix is 2 cups of Kodiak mix and 2 cups of water. Easy peasy.

It was dark when we took this picture because AK can’t handle bright lights in the morning.

As we found out the other day, peaches are in season! And of course that means peachy desserts. No, not Melba or Cobbler. Straight up pie.

Tomorrow is National Banana Split Day and National Whiskey Sour Day!

[FHCx71] National Eat Your Noodles Day/National Oatmeal-Nut Waffle Day

Eat those freakin’ noodles, already!

Whether we are talking about Italian or East Asian foods, noodles are incredibly important. As AK has an undying love for spaghetti, and Spaghetti Day could not ever be enough, we had to acquire more. So we went to the first place that came to mind on Noodles day… Noodles & Company!

The face of a man who needs more noodles

Noodles are great, and to have someone say “eat your noodles” makes it sound like this holiday might be difficult to celebrate. Hopefully you’ve found a way to eat your noodles, whether via the avenue de Macaroni and Cheese or by walking up Pho street. Or maybe you took der spaetzle boulevard?

For dinner we put together Oatmeal-Nut Waffles using our favorite Kodiak mix with some Quaker oats and chopped pecans. This is now the third holiday we’ve used Kodiak (after Blueberry Pancake Day and Pancake Tuesday) and this time it’s for waffles. Same kind of mix, and they make phenomenal waffles, too!

2016-03-11 17.38.51

1 cup of mix often makes more than 1 waffle. So in total we used 2 cups of mix, 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of oats and 1/4 cup of pecans. Made 2.75 waffles.

This waffle is about to be devoured.

Delicious, fluffy interior.

We love this mix because it’s so incredibly good for you while maintaining how good it tastes. All the protein really helps keep you full as well. 380 calories for 1.375 full-size Belgian waffles? Yes, please. For comparison, an IHOP waffle is 500 calories. Doesn’t taste as good as Kodiak, either.

Tomorrow is National Baked Scallops Day!

I like this place a waffle lot

SP here, for a quick write-up about an amazing spot just north of the University of Minnesota: Black Coffee and Waffle Bar. I went here with a coworker before helping out with a “camp” at the U, and it blew my mind. I couldn’t think about anything else for the rest of the day.

To me, there’s a holy trio of breakfast foods: french toast, pancakes, and waffles. Personally, I believe that french toast is one of the greatest foods of all time, and the best among the three. Pancakes and waffles are locked in an eternal battle for supremacy. Sometimes pancakes win, and sometimes waffles.

Black Coffee and Waffle is aptly named because those are essentially the two items on the menu. 7am-9pm every day – coffee and waffles. They have a few bakery items, but you know what you’re getting into when you walk in the door. I can’t speak much to the coffee because I am not a connoisseur, not even much of a fan. But waffles are my domain.

Among the waffle choices are sweet and savory options. Now, if you’re like a couple of my [crazy] friends, you’re not a fan of sweet foods for breakfast, so you might opt for the ham and swiss waffle: a waffle-sized slice of ham with melted swiss over it. Hearty and tasty for the meat-eater. If you’re like me, anything that has the word “banana” becomes immediately more attractive. This time around, I opted for the Banana Nut waffle, with whipped cream, walnuts, nutmeg, and cinnamon. It tastes like a banana nut bread that just got pressed into a waffle.

A great waffle has an exterior crunch that is unique to wafflekind. The interior is super fluffy but slightly chewy in order to feel substantial. It’s almost like a french fry, in a way. And unlike the french fry, the Belgian waffle does have its origins in its namesake country. It’s all a great combination.

Also, I bought AK a waffle maker a couple weeks ago. Maybe she’ll make some of these at home. But in the meantime, I’ll definitely be back to Black Coffee and Waffle Bar.
